Tourists should be made aware of pickpocketing in Paris !

Our trip to Paris turned out to be a disaster! We had a nasty experience of being pickpocketed. We had just left the 'Louvre' & took the subway. As soon as I got a seat in the train, I realized that my bag was open & my wallet WITH ALL MY CASH, IDs & credit cards & my make up bag were stolen. My issue is WHY THE HELL CAN'T THE TOURISM AUTHORITIES, THE POLICE & THE HOTEL staff give the innocent tourists PRIOR WARNINGS/ADVICE/GUIDELINES as regards how bad & rampant the problem of pickpocketing is IN THIS CITY esp. the Metro & Line 1 in particular. What a shame that no one warned us. The least they can do is put posters in subway stations. Horrible & shame on you Paris/France for not taking care of your guests. It was a sudden trip & so I had no time to check my trip advisor forum & will henceforth never travel without referring to it like I usually do. The whole experience was HORRIBLE!

Guidebooks contain warnings. It may be either shown under a 'Safety' or 'Crimes' heading or similar. One needs to be vigilant about taking precautions to deter this sort of crime such as wearing a money belt instead of carrying all cash, cards, passport/ID's in one bag. Some prefer to these items in their hotel's safe.

It is a problem for sure, and the government should try to help the situation. Yet one can't expect that to happen so one has to assume the responsibility. Petty crime and worse also occur in other major cities even in one's home city.

Sorry for your bad experience. Too bad you did not have time to research a bit before your trip. Any guidebook you pick up will warn of this problem. On our way to the Louvre in the metro station they even announced it over the loud speakers. Same thing at the Orsay. I believe that any city that is visited by tourists is a target for pick pockets. Our first Paris trip I wore one of those neck pouch things. I don't feel the need for that anymore but one thing I do not do when on vacation anywhere is carry my wallet with all my stuff in my purse.

We can sympathize with you to some extent but come on now! surely anyone knows that there are pickpockets in any major town? Aren't there any pickpockets in your country? This has been discussed on TA many many times.

All guide books, regardless of the country /town they feature have a section about problems one should expect when travelling.

I am sorry you had a bad experience...but.

You are an adult.

You are traveling in a big city.

Paris is no worse for pickpocketing than any other major European city -- big cities are not Disneyland, and for every 10 wonderful people, there's one who wants to separate you from your cash as quickly as possible.

You are well past the age of anyone having to take you by the hand and lead you around, giving you warnings of what you should and should not do. (if you're not, there are plenty of escorted tours you might consider)

The Paris police force has an entire unit dedicated to pickpocketing, and in fact just made a rather large string of arrests that they estimate will stop several million euros each year in petty thefts.

(rather interesting that several sites on the Internet mention pickpocketing as a significant concern in Manama.)

I too am sorry that you had this experience but there are indeed warnings. There are regular public address announcements about the problem on the métro.

Pick-pocketing is something any traveller should be aware of and take ordinary precautions to avoid no matter where he or she is going. I can't imagine anyone who has travelled outside their home country to a big city more than once who needs to be reminded of that fact.

For other visitors reading this, besides taking ordinary precautions to avoid pick-pocketing you should never carry all your cash, IDs and credit cards with you and certainly not all in one place. Take one credit card, your ATM card if you think you will need it, enough cash for the day and the minimum of ID. We carry our drivers licenses (when we don't forget ;-)) and a photocopy of the relevant page of our passports. The rest we leave in the hotel safe or well hidden in our apartment. And then we are careful to distribute what we are carrying in different places, none of them easy for a pick-pocket to get at.

it ain't such a desperate situation here or any place else that we have visited & we have been world travellers for the past 25 years. At the Police station too there was another German couple who had fallen victim to it.... in this case, the wallet dissappeared from the gentleman's trouser pocket! Now who would expect that?

No one is being vengeful except frankly you. Just look at the 'tone' of your second to last post as well as what you've said to all here.

Really you seem to be the only one who is irritated about nothing given that you say that you're world travellers for twenty-five years. What myself and others have tried to let you know is that Paris is not the only city to take precautions about theft, and as others have stated there are announcements about pickpocketing. So a sudden trip or a long planned trip are no different in terms of protecting oneself from theft.

your reply is much appreciated Suzanne. Am glad you heard such announcements. I wasn't lucky enough. We hardly had time to plan anything....it all was so sudden when I had been waiting to see Paris for the last 26 years! I was upset only because everyone seems to be so casual about such a significant & major problem in Paris. Some people have put up horribly nasty replies!

"Some people have put up horribly nasty replies!"

Well, I certainly don't see any posts like that. Many empathize with you and others offer reminders about how you can keep yourself safe.

If you have been traveling as many years as you say, this really is something that you should have known many, many trips ago.

It is awful that ANYONE should have to go through something like this, but experience should have taught you to be vigilant about protecting your money and other belongings. My sympathies are with you.

You know what they say ... once bitten, twice shy, so I am sure you will be more aware about your surroundings and possessions next trip.
