Suggestions for Paris Trip

My wife and I are going to France for the first time in September and would like to stay a little more than a week (9-10 days). We would like to be in Paris for 5 or 6 days and then head south. Cannes or Nice? Not sure if there are better places to go?

Any advice for other places to see?

Also what is a good area to say in Paris? We are in are mid 40's and want an area that is quieter but with good access to the sites.

Thanks

Get your hands on a guidebook -- France is stuffed to overflowing with fabulous places to go and see -- most of which are considerably closer to Paris than Cannes or Nice. Daytrips from Paris to the Loire, to Champagne, Versailles, or any of the other dozens of nearby attractions would help you make the most of your trip.

Remember that the day you arrive and the day you leave are all but lost to travel - getting to/from the airport, security/customs, and jet lag on the arrival.

You additionally basically lose an entire day any time you change cities -- checking out of your hotel, getting to the station/airport, the journey itself, and getting to the new hotel...you can salvage a couple of hours, but it's not really a sightseeing day...by the time you have 5-6 days in Paris, lose 2 days to coming and going, and another day to travel, you don't have any time left to see anything else!

Hi, I will be there in July and staying in the 7th, near rue cler, Eiffel Tower, Napoleon's Tomb, etc… Supposedly a more upscale arrondissement and quieter at night. We will be staying at Hotel La Bourdonnais.

The 7th is perfect for 1st timers. Versailles is a must, it was one of the highlights of our trip in 2009

If you want to spend some of the time in Nice or Cannes, it would only make sense if you flew home from Nice. However, there is a lot to be said to spending all the time in Paris and taking a couple of day trips from there.

Normandy is a 2-4 hour train ride from Paris, you could do a couple of days, Mont St Michel and St. Malo and surrounding area, train for an hour to Bayeux and do the D-Day beaches and enjoy the medieval tapestry. If you want to fly out of Paris it is then just a couple of hours from Bayeux. Lots of great day trip ideas, Dijon, Fontainbleau, Vaux le Vicomte, Versailles....... forgive the spelling!

Just a thought, plenty to do in Paris for 9-10 days though.

I'd base in Paris and do day tripping -- or if you want another region, I'd do Burgundy or the Loire -- for a few days (with a car) and then return to Paris as it is good to be in the city you fly from at the end
