Day trip to Paris

We'll be arriving at Gare du Nord next Saturday (18th) morning and plan to visit the Louvre first. What's the best way to get there? RER or on foot? Walking would enable us to see more of the city, but we don't want to use all of our time walking if it's a long way.

We plan to visit the Eiffel Tower as well. Is it best to go up in the daylight or at night? And how long should we allow for the trip to the top and back down? I know it will depend how long we spend looking at the view, but an idea of how to long to allow would be helpful.

Many thanks

Angie

Neither RER nor on foot. Take bus 38 which starts at Gare du Nord and get off at Chatelet. Walk to Louvre from there.

Eiffel Tower quite a walk from Louvre, but worth the effort as you will be walking parallel to the Seine and seeing the Tuilleries and Place de la Concorde, continue along the Quai as far as the Petit Palais and cross the Seine by way of the Alexandre III Pont, with a view to the golden dome. Keep on walking along the Quai until you get to the Tower. By this time, it will start getting dark (assuming you spend 3 or 4 hours at the Louvre). Time to go up depends on queues.

Have a nice trip

Thanks - we hadn't thought of using the bus. Good idea. We're hoping to see the sun set from the tower (weather permitting!)

looking at 3 1/2 days in Paris in June. Anyone suggest an itinerary? We are willing to be on the go and see it all-or as much as we can. What would be most convenient area to stay?

You can never see it all in 3.5 days....or 3.5 months or maybe even years...

However, there are the hop on/hop off busses which can be a nice way to check out the sights....

There are the museums ...pick one a day...Don't expect to do the Louvre except to see the famous pieces of a small part of it with particular interest to you...Do plan to spend half a day at least at the Musee d'Orsay which has so many impressionist paintings...

A boat cruise on the flyboats is mandatory imo....try it at night and then by day...totally different views...

There are reliable bus tour companies as well that will tour you around to get a feel for central Paris...

Wear good walking shoes and try to cover a bit of each day's itinerary on foot..Paris is possibly the best walking city in the world...It is so beautiful you hate to be underground on the metro missing it...

Pick a neighborhood or park to stroll...Tuileries or Jardin du Luxembourg come to mind...

Do a little shopping...Le Bon Marche is interesting in the sixth arrondissement..

Don't wear yourself out but rather start planning your next stay in the city of lights when you can't get it all done...

Definetly not a walk from Gare Du Nord. Its quite a long way and would take for ever. Can't vouch for the buses, I'd take the Metro but thats only because I know my way around it !

Plan your time in the Louvre, hit what you want to see and get out, it is Enormous ! you could be in there for ever if you let yourself.

I've been up the Eiffel tower at dusk, its actually really nice that time of the evening the view is spectacular. When I went in April at around 7pm ish there were hardly any queues (which is a bonus) and it was much quieter than during the daytime. Total took us about an hour with no queues. Really depends on the queues at that time.

Depending on what you are planning to do between the Louvre and the tower, the area near Opera Garnier adn the grands magazins is really good for a spot of shopping, soaking up the atmosphere and lots of places to eat. You could eat there then travel across to the tower to visit after dinner. Its a great view with the city lit up and very romantic.
