Need French translation from English for food allergies

Hi. I have food allergies and I hate to rely on a google translator for this. I like to print a smalll piece of paper in case a waiter doesn't speak English, I can just hand it to him. I have friends who are fluent in Spanish & Italian, but not French.

If anyone is willing to translate please:

"I have severe food allergies. I am allergic to all types of nuts and all types of shellfish. I cannot eat these items in any type of food or beverage. Thank you."

Je souffre de graves allergies alimentaires. Je suis allergique aux noix et crustacés de toutes sortes. Je ne peux manger ou boire tout aliment contenant ces éléments. Merci.

You can get these cards already printed online. Here is one firm:

www.achooallergy.com/foodallergycards.asp…

Here is another link that includes other firms, and ones you can print yourself in foreign languages: http://www.avoidingmilkprotein.com/cards.htm

Have a safe trip.

Thank you both so much!!! I really appreciate it. I always have to be so careful when I travel. I never knew you could buy those cards. I don't have time for this trip because I'm leaving Thursday, but I will buy for next trip. Again Thank you!

While travginny's translation is correct, it doesn't convey the fact that you're allergic to all sorts of nuts, because there's no word in French that covers all nuts.

"Noix" is mostly read as strictly walnuts, and a lot of people won't understand it also applies to hazelnuts (noisettes), peanuts (cacahuètes et arachide), almonds, etc. You can say "fruits secs" but then it also includes raisins and all dried fruits.

I would also say "fruits de mer" instead of "crustacés", it's more comprehensive and a more common word.

Thanks Floree66.

Would you possibly write another translation for me adding the additional nuts (hazelnuts, almonds, pine nuts...)so I have it written the best possible way? I'm not sure where to insert the words. Maybe I can also have a sentence that has both "fruits de mer" and "crustacés".

I am leaving tomorrow and don't want to take any chances. Thanks.

What if the ''garçon'' is illeterate? Find a pictogram or icon to print on the other side.

Illiteracy is fairly rare in this fine city.

Miriam, I really recommend going to the website. They're specialists and have the best, most comprehensive translations available.

MiriamLisa, I would, but each time I try to compose something in my head, I get confused as to what exactly a nut allergy covers. The thing is I don't know enough about allergies in general, and yours in particular, to feel confident to write such a card, and keep you safe.

As good as anyone's intentions may be, better to seek help from people who are in business to write this stuff rather than the best effort of a layperson.

(No offense intended at all, Flore - I think you're wise to step aside rather than risk giving an incorrect translation for a potentially deadly allergy)

Thanks for all the input. I travel all the time and mostly rely on others and internet translators. My main concern is getting the grammar correct as not to insult anyone. I never knew there were cards pre printed and now I will purchase them for all my future trips!
