I would like to add my comment about my recent experience with Europcar arising from our trip to France in May, 2012. This was my first rental with this company having booked this rental in December, 2011 for the May 2012 trip. Europcar offers rentals for the new Alfa Romeo Guiletta so I booked this car. The rental agreement stipulated the availability of the Alfa or "similar". I recognize that if the car requested is not available one has to cope with a "similar car".
Upon arrival at Charles du Gualle Airport at terminal 2D I noticed the Alfa on the lot and was thrilled with the prospect of obtaining my selected car. I checked in and was met by a rental staff by the name of "Amer". I requested the Alfa. Before long I was confronted with demands by Amer to purchase extra insurance which i did not need since i have coverage through the Canadian Autoclub CAA. He was unhappy with my response and after a few tense moments and a demand for a $2,000 deposit on my Master Card he provided me with the keys. He also told me I would be liable for charges up to $40,000 euros should the car be damaged. I should have noticed that the keys were for a Nissan Juke parked in space 99 and not the Alfa parked in spot 98, hardly a similar car, so I returned and politely requested the Alfa thinking this was an honest mistake. Wrong. Amer told me the car was not available as it needed to be cleaned, when i said i could wait for the car, he then said, "forget about it" and that I could not have the car. I asked to speak with the manager, he said the manager was not in and a second later responded that he was the manager. I then proceeded to the car return office located a few feet away and informed the rental agent about the disagreement. The rental agent confirmed the Alfa was available and told me he would get me the keys to rent the car. He returned 5 minutes later to apologize but he could not rent the Alfa to me. Prior to my leave Amer said he would be happy to refund my rental but having checked at the rental company next to Europcar it was clear that the early booking with Europcar could not be matched in price or the availability of a suitable car. I told Amer that I found him difficult and unprofessional. I left with the Juke, unhappy and disappointed. I subsequently responded to the evaluation of service sent to me by Europcar just before the end of my rental period at the end of May, but so far have not heard from them. No way can I recommend this company for a rental.
