Moulin Rouge - different to Vegas show?

I've never had a burning desire to go to the Moulin Rouge but we're heading to Paris for the first time in October and plenty of friends are saying it's a must. I know "must" is different for each person.

I've been to one of the more upmarket "t*#s 'n feathers" show in Las Vegas and that, in my opinion, was pretty forgettable.

Can anyone who has been to a Vegas show tell me if the Moulin Rouge is similar please? And if not, their opinion on why I should/shouldn't go?

Thanks :)

While I've never seen one or the other, I'd guess Las Vegas has all the skills and funds to make at least a show equal (and possibly better) than the Moulin Rouge. If you were not impressed in Vegas, you'll certainly find better ways to spend your time and money in Paris, especially on a first visit.

Was dragged to Le Moulin Rouge last May, with visiting friends who insisted. It is like a Vegas show, but on a much, much smaller scale - including the bustlines...The eye-candy is pleasant enough, but when they brought out the magician and the Shetland pony, I couldn't wait to get out of there. You do get one rousing can-can at the end, though. My friends were vastly underwhelmed.

Take a look at their website (lemoulinrouge.fr in French, but you'll get the gist) - you will get a taste of the current show, which is pretty modern in tone, and may not be what your friends are looking for. Probably you cannot change their minds, but at least they will have a good story to tell back home. Like many things in Paris, Le Moulin Rouge looks a lot better in the movies!

thank you very much Flore66 and pattyinparis. I might put it on the "inevitable return visit" itinerary!

IMO, it's a gigantic waste of time and huge amounts of money.

DH really wanted to go, and even he was sorely disappointed. You're practically stuffed into the theatre with a shoehorn. It's crowded, touristy, and over the top cheesy. I didn't like where we were seated either, as I felt it was a fire hazard.

We were escorted to the upper tables in the last row, then tables were set on the stairs. Once you were in, there was no way to get out IMO. I kept thinking if there were a fire, we would be gonners.

It's cheesy canned music, and the dancers don't often dance, but just sort of walk out and pose, with their big headress thingies on.

Having said that - some people truly do love it. It boggles my mind, but it's true! :-)
