The Decline and Fall of the Champs-Elysees?

An article in the Sept. 14 NY Times entitled "Champs Elysees, An American Mall" is well-worth a read for those who participate in the ongoing forum debate as to whether the Champs is a worthwhile destination.

As one who believes the Champs is perhaps the least Parisian place in Paris, I found the description of what it once was, and what it now is to be fascinating. Sorry I missed it as it was a half-century ago, but still quite sure I have no interest in spending my time there now.

My one and only time on the Champs Elysees was in 1976. I do remember going to McDonalds. I've had no desire to return on my subsequent trips.

I can't wait to return to the CE for my Laduree macarons. And to take my WWII-vet father so he can relive the old memories of celebration.

I dunno -- when I was there on New Years Eve 9 months ago there was a A LOT of French being spoken -- so at least the place was filled with FRENCH tourists!

RVP loves to insult Americans and anything America-related. Just report him. But say one bad work about Africans or Arabs and he/she goes nuts!

Who would travel to Puget Sound for urban scenery?

No one.

That's as silly as going to Paris for whale watching!

There is no comparison here.

Ahem----To get back to the main subject--- I too read the article reprinted in our local paper. When I was in Paris it was exciting for me to see that wonderful avenue after reading so much through the years about it for one reason or another. And yes, I was disappointed that it was as terribly commercial as it is. I would also have loved to see it as it was 50 years ago. After having seen it once, there are more intriguing areas of Paris I want to re-visit.
