Their web page has "...3 Restaurants & 1 Bar..." so it seems so.

Any hotel that has a restaurant and/or bar is open for business to the public. I would love to try their Chinese restaurant.

Theoretically, any hotel, bar or restaurant is open to the public...however, any establishment may refuse service to anyone at anytime, at their discretion.

We - 2 well-behaved couples in our 40's, dressed to the nines, speaking fluent French and obviously able to afford being on the premises - were turned away from both the Ritz and Le Meurice during the Christmas holidays 2010, as "non-guests of the hotel".

It can happen - welcome to Paris!

I, too, was turned away from the bar at the Ritz but I was only dressed to about the threes, if that.

Of course you are! This is a beautiful hotel BUT in terms of evening entertainment it still has yet to find itself as a place to see and be seen so it can sometimes lack the atmosphere you would find at the Plaza Athenee, Park Hyatt or George V etc. Its a stunning place though so I don't want to put you off.

However one point worth noting is that late evenings some hotel bars only allow guests and I'm sure this would also be the case at the Shangri-La.

In terms of dress code this is not a place you turn up in jeans and t-shirt. Look chic but not over the top.

It's possible to have drinks at the Shangri-La but the bar doesn't have a view.

Ah, the weird desire for prestige rather than pleasure! Sorry that you have fallen into that category.

I've never been turned away from a hotel bar. But then, I'm an early drinker. Perhaps helpful to start off before the traditional cocktail hour. And I invaribly arrive first, on my own, which probably helps, too.

K2 what is sad is limiting oneself to one particular style. This crowd can be a hoot!
