Depends how you like it:

- Boucherie Rouliere on rue des Cannettes is a bit of a hit or miss; can be either wonderful or really quite poor;

- Les grillades de Buenos Aires on bd Montparnasse does Argentinian style meat, and they do that very well;

- you can usually get a good tartare or filet mignon in most brasseries, such as the ones on Bd Montparnasse (Dome, Rotonde, Coupole, Closerie des Lilas), Brasserie Lutetia or Brasserie Balzar;

- further away, Louchebem on southern side of Les Halles is another all-meat place, with a very good value for money (all you can eat) "Butcher plate"

Thanks so much for the options. We have been in Europe for 5 weeks and ready for something familiar to home!

Make sure you are getting filet mignon de boeuf. Filet mignon in France is often pork...

Wise warning, indeed

If you want something even more familiar, head to The Moose on rue des 4 vents in St Germain: http://www.mooseparis.com/

It's one of the very few Canadian bars in Paris; can't comment on their more sophisticated items but their nibbling items & cocktails are quite good.

Indeed, about the only filet mignon that you find in restaurants is pork.

Le Severo is often rated as "the best steak frites in Paris", and everyone we have taken there agrees. Serious beef and real french fries, a decent price and a nice atmosphere. Second Le Louchebem, too.

"Filet mignon" is always pork, according to my butcher.

"Entrecote" is similar to a boneless ribeye .

"Bavette" is a thin cut, similar to skirt steak.

"Pave de boeuf" is a thick cut, and is closest to what you are looking for.

Almost all French steaks are cut thin and are much leaner - ie, chewy - than you might be used to, but have great flavor, especially if you like it rare.

Look for onglet on menus. It's the hanger steak, an excellent cut of beef. It's very popular on menus in Paris, served with crispy shallots and frites.

A "pavé" (paving stone) or a Châteaubriand is a thick cut perfect for people who like their steak very rare.
