vegetarian food in Paris

We'll be in Paris next week and would like any tips on finding vegetarian food. Dairy products are ok, but not poultry or seefood. It'd be nice to have options other than or in addition to salads, baked potatoes, or pastries. Can we simply request some entree without meat in restaurants even if the menu doesn't contain one?

All suggestions and information welcome. Thanks.

Joy In Food on the lower part of rue Truffaut in the 17th is well-regarded vegetarian, but only open for lunch. L'As du Falafel on rue des Rosiers in the Marais has stunning falafels (of course). Vegetarian couscous is offered in nearly every couscouserie (I'd suggest Chez Omar on rue de Bretagne) or L'Arganier on rue Ste-Croix de la Bretonnerie. Salade chevre chaud (salad greens with a piece of warm goat cheese) is a very good twist on a plain salad and is widely available. Stop by any of the open air markets, and you can find all sorts of fresh fruits and vegetables to eat raw. Batignolles and Raspail both have a guy who makes really greasy, but tasty, potato & onion cakes. Since dairy is acceptable, don't neglect to try real yogurt--you'll never want to go back to the cr*p we get in the States.

<<Can we simply request some entree without meat in restaurants even if the menu doesn't contain one?>> You can always try, but chances are not high of success in a real restaurant. You'll have better luck in cafes.

If you do eggs, La Cigale Recamier is a great souffle place.

La Pharmacie in the 11th.

Aquarius in the 14th.

Both have great menus and bio wines.

Also the bioshop on rue Delambre just behind Le Dome. It is in the 14th but the other side of the street is the 6th.

Just remembered Tuesdays lunch on the rue Ste. Anne. An antire street of Japanese noodle joints, one more mouth watering than the next. Should be able to get a lovely miso based bowl there!

If you use the search function on this page to search for "vegetarian" you should find a lot of resources. This topic comes up every few weeks and I know there are many references in the archives to restaurants and web sites.

Bon appétit!

I do have to give a big heads up to one of the best vegetarian/vegan/organic restaurants I've ever eaten at - Au Grain de Folie, on 24 Rue de la Vieuville near the Abesses metro stop (Montmartre). It's a fairly small place, with only about 6 tables - the very lovely lady who owns the restaurant is the only worker, so can be worth booking in advance, although we didn't as we got there for 7.30pm...most people didn't seem to get there til gone 9pm

Food was inexpensive, there was also the option of organic red wine and a variety of fruit and herbal teas and fresh juices. Which we enjoyed sampling very much.

Her cooking was absolutely superb, we ended up eating there about 3 nights in a row because it was so appetising and the company was so nice. There were a nice array of starters, very filling mains with decent sized portions - good selection of veggie friendly deserts such as home-made apple pie.

If I ever have to recommend anywhere for veggies/vegans it would definitely be this place. Top class, intend going back there this summer.
