My daughter and I returned earlier today from a 2 day trip to Paris to watch the CL final. We stayed at the Hotel de Lausanne, located close to Folies Bergere.
In our somewhat small room, there was a note to say the safes in the hotel rooms weren't working and that the hotel would take no responsibility for items left in the rooms and their advice was to leave valuables in the main safe located in reception. Prior to going out, we put our passports, an ipod, train tickets, a credit card and 2 debit cards and approximately 450 Euros into a sealed envelope, which my daughter signed across the scotch tape used to seal it.
We didn't get back to the hotel until around 1am that night, so didn't get our envelope until about 10.30 the next morning. When we opened the envelope, we realised immediately that 180 Euros and my credit card has gone. We reported it straight away to the manager, who initially appeared reluctant to believe us but eventually we convinced her we were telling the truth.
To cut a long story short, we spent a couple of hours in the reception area while she made calls to the owner and I cancelled my credit card. We then went to the police station and spent about another hour there. All in all, we finally got away for our day at 3pm. The hotel did give us the 180 Euros, which was very good of them.
The say the night receptionist wasn't their usual person and they weren't able to speak to him during yesterday and he wasn't behind the desk last night - we don't know if he had just not turned up or was sacked - hopefully it was the latter.
Anyway, as a cautionary tale, beware of this happening to you. Keep a list of items, exact amounts of money being left, credit card numbers etc just in case this happens to you.
