Tell me about Monoprix

I've seen several references to this store ... but would you describe it as a department store like Macy's or a shopette like 7-11? Or something in-between? I just wonder if it's a good place to pick up snacks for lunch or something like that.

It is just a variety store but there is also a supermarket in it.

There are several versions -- Monoprix, which is the full store, Monop which is a superette with only food items, Daily Monop, which is a snack store, and then at Bercy Village, there is Monop Store, which I have not yet figured out, but it also has a restaurant.

Yes, in between would describe it. Are you there now? why don't you pop in and check out the aisles.

The company's stores combine food retailing with hardware, clothing, household items and gifts.

It is the France version of Target. The one near the Montparnasse Tower is huge. We shopped there for groceries as we were staying in an apartment, but we also bought a lot of soaps and various gifts and misc stuff.

It's a decent place to pick up supplies if you've rented an apartment. I don't particularly care for the full-size Monoprix and usually stick to the smaller Monop stores. I like Franprix also. They are pretty comparable.

Does anyone know if we have backpacks on if we can enter the store with them? It would save us backtracking.

One thing to keep in mind: Monoprix is the most expensive supermarket chain in Paris. Franprix is the main chain in the city, and it is considerably cheaper. Interestingly enough, it is owned by the same company as Monoprix (Galeries Lafayette!).

And yes, you can enter with a backpack.

There are several 'brands' of grocery stores - Franprix, Casino, Ed...

Monoprix often has clothing, accessories, etc as well, but not always. I buy Monoprix cookies for the office back home because it is just about the only cookie package that has 'made in France' on it (not Belgium, Switzerland or...). They also have very tasty chocolate bars (like a Lindt )...

You probably already are aware of this, but just adding it as a heads up--be careful what you put in your backpacks because they re an easy target for pickpockets. Not great for crowded places or on Metro.
