paris cdg airport time needed for international departures

How much time does one need to depart on an international flight from Paris CDG airport. Is three hours enough?

3 hours for a transatlantic flight, 2 hours maybe less for other destinations.

Flights to another country within the European Schengen area do not count as international flights: 2 hours is fine. For flights outside the Schengen area, allow a minimum of 3 hours.

We are arriving by train from Avignon and one arrival is 3 hours 10 minutes before our flight departs to Atlanta. I am concerned about the TGV running a little late and have read horror stories about CDG. Our terminal is 2E.

Dare we risk it or should we take the earlier train which will strand us for 6 hours at CDG?

Many thanks.

Only you can decide.

Most (including myself) would advise returning to CDG the day/night before your flight home to Atlanta.

If you miss your flight, not only will you be "stranded" at CDG for far longer than six hours, new tickets home (probably with no credit for the missed flights) will be very costly.

Are you all pretty sure about only two hours for non-translantic flights? We took a flight to Prague a couple of years ago and we had to go through the same security as the flights to north america. The flight continued on to Istanbul I think. Anyway, I am a bit reluctant to state unequivocally that 2 hours is safe at this point.

Prague is not in the Schengen area. My post said 2 hours for Schengen destinations, 3 hours elsewhere.

While there are never any absolute guarantees about choosing any lead time for a flight, I generally think that 2 hours is probably sufficient for most flights. Transatlantic flights terminate check-in at one hour before scheduled (a TSA requirement) which is one of the reasons why most airlines recommend 3 hours lead time.

This information is usually available on an airlines website but some departure airports, such as CDG, have unique requirements and one might need to search a bit to find specific references for this airport.

I have read horror stories about the aloofness of CDG airport security who will hold a line up for hours to interrogate one passenger instead of removing the passenger or redirecting the line to another security gendarme. French speaking passengers of course are given preferential treatment to move to another line while security pretends not to speak English.

And what about the timeliness of the TGV train schedules?
