How does Seat Allocation work -SNCF trains

I am trying to purchase tickets from Paris to Amiens return for November. It will allow me to purchase them at the discounted rate but it has the flowing notice:

"On some trains, the place you requested isn't available for the fare you chose. We have reserved you a place with different criteria instead.

Attention, some of your requests for seats cannot be satisfied"

Does this mean my wife and I will not be able to get a seat at all? Or not be able to sit together?

Thanks for any help

What is "It"?

Which booking site are you using?

Have a look at

The site that I have used is this one. I thought it was the main one?

As I recall, if you buy a cheap PREMs ticket on an Intercités train, you don't get a seat reservation. You sit where you can find a seat.

The Capitanetrain's site also has "no assigned seat" but will allow me to purchase tickets. Does this mean on either site that I can book and pay and seats will be available but not necessarily together? Or what?

Normally on a short trip like that, there is open seating. I've never had to scramble to find seats together.

From memory when I was booking the TER trains don't have seat reservations only the TGV do, so you are possibly on a TER train so can sit anywhere you want, first in best dressed.

We have seat reservations for the TGV but not on the TER when we change trains for the last bit of our journey

The trains for this journey are Intercités, which are between TGV and TER.

I think you can get seat reservations with an online booking for Intercités if you buy full-price tickets.
