Rue Oberkampf - no love?

Hey folks,

I'm a travel newb. I hadn't been on a plane in 28 years and then back in September, my brother and I took our Mom to Spain for her 60th birthday. Needless to say, I'm now hooked.

I've decided that for my 35th birthday in March, I'm sending myself to Paris for 10 days or so. I've been looking around TA and other sites, and there's been a lot of love for the 5th and 6th, as well as a few others. I haven't however, really seen any mention of the 11th (specifically, Rue Oberkampf area). Seems like there are all sorts of bars etc. going on there, so I just assumed it would be a pretty excellent place to stay. Is anyone familiar with area that can provide some insight?

During my time in Paris, I'm definitely going to do all the touristy sightseeing stuff (though there's no way in hell you're getting me up in that Eiffel Tower). Not really looking for bars with large crowds, but rather with good crowds (even if it's a smaller crowd).

I speak a little French and have already started brushing up again, so I figure by March, I'll be good to go.

Anyway, if you have any info it would be very much appreciated. I'm going to be doing AirBnb for lodging, so I can pretty much stay anywhere in the city. Just figured I'd see what people have to say.

Thanks!

We stayed in an apartment in the 11th just one block south of Rue Oberkamph last year, and will be staying in an Airbnb apartment in the 10th just north of there near the Canal St. Martin this coming May. It is a lively area with lots of restaurants and clubs. Depending on where you are in the arrondissement access to the center - Marais, etc. is good. We liked the area very much.

We like the area - stayed at the Citidines there a few years back for a week just to stay in the area and explore. Tons of clubs and restos in the area that are more affordable than the Marais for sure. Below is Time Out article on clubs. The area just north of Parmentier metro station is definitely the place for the under 40 crowd. Hip and totally fun and very safe. We dined the entire week in this area including at Cafe Charbon mentioned in the article below. With a dj spinning - resto and bar it was an eye popping exp. for sure in this trendy area.

I spent part of a sunny afternoon in the 11th last November (yes, not all November days there are gray), to see Rue du Dahomey -- because someone I had read about once lived there. It impressed me as a nice old, off-the-beaten-track part of Paris, that I wouldn't mind trying a hotel in on a future visit.

Here is my old Oberkampf report, which you might find useful because Street View only has daytime photos: www.anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi…

The 11th is the "new 3rd" - if I didn't like my apartment so much, I would move here.

I stayed in the 11th for the first time earlier this year and loved it. There are terrific bars and some of the best restaurants in the city are in the area. Also, I found that I was able to practice my French more in shops, bakeries, etc. because the salespeople don't automatically switch to English.

I don't know if it's a good idea to stray away from the Seine, Rachel. Many of our top specialists here insist that everybody stay grouped along the river.

No prob. Stay on Oberkampf and the #96 bus will whisk you to the river in minutes whenever you have the urge.
