Most central Paris is like what you describe. What you are looking for is probably the "old world charm" of the Marais and St Germain neighborhoods.

Cafe au lait doesn't usually cost that much - unless you want to people watch on the Champs Elysees or Place du Trocadero, for example - in which case, the extra markup is worth the location, in my opinion :-)

Hope this helps!

Latte's are not common in Paris. A cafe creme will only cost you 2-3 euros.

Cafe creme is what you want, and will cost usually 3 - 6 euros, depending on whether you sit inside or on terrace - closer to the street, the higher the prices of drinks. Fancy neighborhood, fancy prices. Food prices stay the same, though, wherever you sit. Prices are always listed outside - check before you sit down.

Cafe latte is not French, though the waiters are getting used to hearing it, and will just bring you cafe creme.

Cafe au lait is taken at home, in your pyjamas.

Cappuccino in Paris is a watery abomination, which costs double the price of cafe creme and is best avoided.

I agree with Rasteriasha about area. Do you have a price range in mind? You could stay in a budget hotel in the Latin Quarter for about 100 to 120 euros per night, or in a very nice area of St Germain for closer to 200 -220 euros, and from there, the sky's the limit.

If you want a REALLY good latte, or a great cappucino, we loved this little coffee shop:
