Need help to fulfil a boy's dream

Very recently, our 41-year old son was diagnosed with an untreatable disease, which will not leave him much time to live out his dreams. As an artist, one of those dreams has been to visit Paris, so we are planning a family trip between April 28 and May 6.

Of course he will derive great please from visiting the famous art galleries and museums of the city - there is no lack of options.

But I would like to do for him something really special, something that normal people don't get an opportunity to do. As he is an artist, I would look for something with special significance in his field. An example of an idea that I had would be a visit the restoration department of one of the city's galleries and see what goes on behind the scenes.

But I need some help with ideas! If anyone out there has some idea, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

I don't know if the forum is an appropriate place for responses to this unusual request, but I think that it possible to send an off-line message to me by clicking on the link under my icon to the left of this message.

Write to the Louvre's special collection specialists and ask if he can see their Leonardo sketches (rarely seen, rarely put on exhibit). Explain the circumstances (in English) and ask what sorts of credentials/papers he would need to have to get a few hours to study those famous sketches and commune with the Master.

Write to the Louvre's general information/contact link to get the email address for the restoration section of the Louvre and make a similar inquiry.

Go through the faculty list at the Sorbonne and find an archaeologist and explain the situation and see if anything comes from that (there are several active dig areas in and around Paris, would be interesting to an artist, as they are still turning up objets d'art).

Finally, write to the Louvre about its artists' accommodations. Each year, a certain number of artists are permitted to set up an easel in the Louvre and do a copy of a painting. Usually these are pretty well known artists (and most, to be honest, are French - but they do not have to be French).

Another very interesting option would be for him to meet up with a curator at the Louvre and a behind the scenes tour - curator to artist. As they move works in and out of special exhibits, they have a whole behind-the-scenes operation that most artists would love to see.

I'll send you the addy of an art historian by PM - she may be able to help.
