Montemarte is absolutely wonderful!!!

There is a small part (like 2%] that isn't. It is down the hill in front of the sacre coeur. Overly touristy with street hawkers trying to sell you stuff or grab your arm to tie a string, beggars etc. Easily avoided.

The other area that is interesting but you won't want to spend too much time in is the pigalle area with the sex shops and moulin rouge along blvd clichy. Not dangerous but not pretty.

Otherwise all fantastic!

We stayed in Montemarte a few months ago. We walked to and from the center of Paris. About a 45 min walk. Never took a cab or metro.

Go to rue Caulaincourt on the back (north) side. Very few tourists and lots if great restaurants. Walk along the northern part of rue Lepic where it intersects with rue des abbesses. Then visit the cafes on rue abbesses. Follow Lepic as it goes up north turns west then east Also walk along rue Lamarck near Rue Caulaincourt.

Of course visit the sacre coeur.

Go to the Dali museum--"Espace Dali". Nice neighborhood and cute small museum.

And the best crepes on the planet are at creperie Broceliande. Make reservations or go a few minutes before they open.

Have fun:)

Just don't notice the hawkers and scammers, and I mean do not even SEE them. If they see even a split second glance at them, they will head straight for you.

What to do, enjoy and explore. Enjoy a different view of Paris.

What not to do, let any fears overcome you.

Avoid eye contact with the scammers and hawkers. During the daylight, wear sunglasses and just walk right by like you own the place. I have NEVER had any problems and 2 out of 3 times, I stayed in the Montmartre area.

That's not a short street, so unless you have a cross street, it is hard to tell how far north you are. But you are north of the touristy area near Sacre Coeur and north of Pigalle (the 2 areas mentioned in previous replies).

Make sure you enjoy exploring the area on foot. See rue Caulaincourt, the Vineyard, the Cemetery, Moulin de la Galette.

If you get a nice evening you could have dinner at the Relais de la Butte about half-way down the "front" of the Montmartre hill ---> tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187147-d8…

They do not take reservations for the outside tables but there are a lot of them and after sunset there is a great view down over the lighted city. (order a sample of cheese each for dessert)
