What is the best time to visit Sacre Couer?

I am visiting Paris in July and would like to know what the best time of day would be to visit Sacre Couer and the surrounding areas?

I have heard the early morning is good, however concerned that there will be nothing around it open in the town.

What do you think the best time to visit is????

Sacre Coeur is open from 6am-10.30pm!, but the dome and crypt are not open until 8am (to 8.30pm)

Surely you can make an easy visit during those generous hours??

I agree with going early, if you want to get a good look at Montmartre.

Most cafes will be open by 7:30, since all those people who work in the area will need their morning coffee. Shops usually won't open before 10 AM, but you'll be surprised by how much time you can spend wandering and climbing - the time will fly by.

Do you get wonderful sunsets from the steps of Sacre Coeur?

Basilica - Opening hours every day from 6 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.

Dome and Crypt - Opening hours: every day from 8.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (May to September) and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (October to April).

Best to visit in morning around 7:30-8. It will be less crowded and hence most pleasant and peaceful at that time. Regarding nearby shops they will open by the time you would be done with the visit.

I like it early in the morning when nobody is there, but lots of people like to be in the sunset crowd on the steps, which allows the feeling of sharing a special moment with other people on the same vibe.

Sunset always occurs, since the sun always sinks below the horizon.

A "technicolor sunset" doesn't happen that often, unfortunately, given the weather and pollution factors in Paris.

If you're hoping for excellent color photos, check the weather the day before - otherwise, you can have fun with some very atmospheric black-and-white shots, which are equally interesting.

As long as the sun is out, the more pollution, the better the sunset. So it is preferable for the rest of us not to have a Technicolor sunset!

Thank you all for the suggestions! We love sunsets and seems like a great idea to visit late in the afternoon to soak up the culture!!

Can't wait!
