Best route to travel from paris to rome via rail

We are planning a trip from Paris to Rome in early December this year. Our family all love travelling on trains so we are keen to take this journey via rail. We were wondering which would be the most enjoyable way of completing this trip. Should we use Milan as our changeover (so going Paris to Milan, then Milan to Rome) or would any French cities such as Lyon, Nice or Marseilles be recommended? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated =)

The shortest journey I have found is 11h04. TGV ( high speed train) from Paris (0748) to Milano (1451) then connect to Roma, departing Milano at 15h34 arriving Roma at 18h53. So a full day, you also have overnight trains. Please not that you have low cost airlines operating the Paris to Rome route ( flight is 2 hours and price can be cheaper than train ). enjoy !

You do better to change trains in Turin, as the change in Milan requires a change of stations by metro or taxi.

At present, there is no overnight train from Paris to Rome. There is an overnight train from Paris to Venice, and it is possible to get off this train at Milan early in the morning and change for a train to Rome. However, the Paris-Venice night train gets very poor reviews.

For trains from Paris to Turin or Milan, see www.capitainetrain.com and for onward trains to Rome, see www.trenitalia.com or www.italotreno.it

Has your family done an overnight train before?

Thanks for the contributions everyone. We have never done an overnight train before. We are quite open to whether we should travel overnight or not. On one hand sleeping on a train would be a first and we could consider the cost to be that evening's accommodation. But travelling in the day would of course let us see more of the scenery

How many days is your trip? It would be nice to break your journey a couple of times if your train route would include changes at a couple of interesting stops.

I need an over night train from Paris to Rome in July. Which is better Euro Railways or Italia Rail? Big difference in price.

As noted in reply #2, there is no overnight train from Paris to Rome. You have to take the night train from Paris to Venice, getting off in the middle of the night in Milan to change trains. This is not a sensible way of travelling from Paris to Rome when there are flights taking 2 hours and costing as little as €50.

Do not use EuroRailways. It is a small travel agent in Florida about which there are many complaints.

Italia Rail is a 3rd party reseller for Italian train tickets (authorized), targetting primarily Nth American buyers, it is NOT a train operator. Paris to Venice train is operated by a private operator Thello.

Euro Railways is a travel agent based in Florida with dubious reputation.
