Can't you just call 112 (the emergency telephone number for all Europe) if you need it so? :s

I can't help with the main question, but DH was hospitalised with breathing problems in Dinan, France and received amazing service, ambulance, diagnostics, private room for two days in an absolutely wonderful modern hospital. Our travel insurance paid.

I would say that once you have decided on which towns you want to stay in, Google the main hospital, or ask for info about them on line here. That is something a local will assist with fairly easily.

Do you get reciprocal treatment rights between UK and France?

Don't forget to take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you, if you don't have one, then apply straight away. I always take out Travel Insurance as well as it covers things besides standard health care.

Every pharmacy in France will tell you the nearest emergency (Urgences) hospital. Almost all are public. You must present your EHIC card -you will be charged 50 euro for admittance. If you have to stay in hospital count on appox 25 % to be billed to you, however hospital and treatment charges are not high. The balance may be refundable by your travel insurance depending on excess. If you have to see a doctor most have an open no appointment session several times a week -you will be charged 25 euro per visit. Always see a 'level 1' (public GP ) doctor.

I have always fond the websites of local tourist offices useful when planning a trip, once I have decided where I am gong to. The information given usually includes the address of hospitals in the area. If you are enquiring because of a particular medical condition, the voluntary orgnisation(s) working with people with that condition in UK may well be able to give advice on travel in other countries.

This website gives a map of hospitals in France, and their locations and specialisations. For emergency treatments you would need to click on 'medecine d'urgence' in the right hand column to get a list with full details in the area you will be staying.

I would still prefer the reassurance of a personal recommendation though, such as from a pharmacy or the hotel or other accommodation owner where you will be staying.
