Airport transportation for a family of 4

I am trying to determine the best (and not too expensive!) way for my family of 4 (2 adults/2 teenage sons) to get from CDG airport to central Paris. Not sure if since we have four people if going on shuttle service might be cheaper than the Air France bus and taxi to get to our rental flat. We also need transportation to get a rental car at Orly South so not sure which would way would be best. Can anyone lend me some advice?

With four(4) passengers, a TAXI PARISIAN from the regular taxi rank just outside of every CDG arrival terminal building will probably be your best bet....for both convenience and cost. The same applies to getting out to Orly to pick-up your rental car.

You can scroll back through previous threads on CDG airport transfers to get all the specific details (and more) on just about every other permutation you can imagine.

With a Taxi Parisien you will pay the fare on the meter, 2.60€ for the fourth passenger and 1€ per bag.

The Air France bus might work with a city bus, depending upon your location.

Why are you renting at Orly? It's going to cost you transportation to get there. When you call for a cab, the driver starts the meter when he heads in your direction.

Last time we drove south out of Paris we picked up our car on the Avenue d'Italie, a straight shot to the highway.

Thanks for the info. Since we will be taking a red eye in from the US might just go ahead with the taxi from CDG (so I don't have to think about it much!)

Will look into the car rentals at the Avenue d'Italie location. That would work fine ... we just did not want to drive in the city and wanted a straight access to a major highway. If you know of any other locations like that (we are driving from Paris to Dinan in Brittany) please let me know.

Thanks!

Have the address written down to show to the cab driver. Do not accept rides from people approaching you on the way to the taxi line.

Where is your apartment located?

What route are you planning on taking to Dinan? What stops along the way?

Our flat is on rue St. Dominque in Paris. Have mapquested and googled the driving route from Paris to Dinan and have come up with two very different amounts of driving time (2 1/2 hours or 5 1/2 hours) basically using the same route. Any ideas on how long of a drive it is? Also any ideas on what we could see on the way? (we are going from Dinan to Bayeaux for a few night then back to Paris before departing for home)

Thanks!

It's pretty clear that your MapQuest routing is s bit off....or you selected the option for travel via ox carts. The trip from CDG to anywhere along rue Saint Dominique, in the 7eme, should take 40-55 mins (depending on the vageries of surface traffic).

Taxi Parisian drivers will have a pretty good idea of which route(s) to take to get from CDG to most neighborhoods in central Paris, so detailed driving instructions may be superfluous......but a detailed local street map of the immediate neighborhood of your destination address might be useful. Try using the mapping feature of Pages Jaunes---

Sorry ... mean't to say the route from Paris to Dinan, Brittany is between 2 1/2 and 5 1/2 hours (from Google and Multimap). Am trying to see what might be a stop enroute (to break up the drive)

The taxi option ex CDG is definitely the best one. Beware of one detail though: a "normal" (sedan) car won't be able to acccommodate the four of you plus luggage. But it's OK, since about one in three or four cabs at CDG is a mini van type (in France: Picasso, Mégane, etc. ) with enough room for your family and paraphernalia. So just stand in line nicely. And when your turn comes up, if the first car that comes along is not a minivan, just let the people behind you have this car, and wait for the next available minivan to drive by.

Are you aware that in France autoroutes (interstates) are with tolls and that gas is about $6 a gallon? You should go on viamichelin.com and enter your Paris-Dinan ride, they'll come up with how much it'll cost you. All this to say that it might be more or less the same price to ride the TGV to, say, Rennes (2 hours out of gare Montparnasse), and THERE rent a car to the Dinan-Normandy thing. Of course you might have to pay one way fees for the car if you don't want to return it at Rennes. But it would be so much stress free, since you are obviously a bit afraid at the idea of driving in Paris. And cost wise, but booking ahead, you'll get good deals on SNCF that might even out the cost of a rental car. Just a suggestion to broaden your options... And yes, I was about to forget: there is nothing groundbreaking to see between Paris and Rennes: just flat rural scenery, unless you want to do a detour and visit the Loire Châteaux, but that's another story.

It all depends really on what and how much you are packing. If you are deciding on taking a taxi, it is about $50-60+. I made the mistake taking a taxi, due to the fact of the cost, AND it took longer than the train due to traffic. Everyone takes the train. If you have travelled in Chicago or New York, It is actually easier than that and located just outside baggage. Just bring backage with wheels and get the metro stops from the hotel. I lived in Paris for a bit, and you will be on the trains constantly.

Good luck,

You might also '..map out..' your route using other services by way of comparison...and for additional details of the trip. As an example, the Michelin site gives warning of Speed Camera and Toll locations .
