No, not a major earthquake but the major flood that is bound to affect Paris and its region at some point in the future and that could be as bad as or even worse than the 1910 one.

To that effect, an emergency evacuation test will take place in Paris and its suburbs either on March 16th, 2016 or some time between March 7th and 18th, 2016.

I don't know if and how it will affect those of us who will be in Paris then but this website should give more information in the coming weeks about the locations and times of the simulation exercises, exhibits and information points for the general public: http://www.prefecturedepolice.interieur.gouv.fr/Sequana/Sequana-grand-public/Information-du-public/Information-points

As a side note, a few years ago and in great secrecy at the time, the château de Vincennes was equipped to become the emergency Presidential Palace should the Head of State and his/her staff have to evacuate the Elysée Palace because of a flood. Everything has been ready ever since for an emergency transfer to Vincennes.

The site was chosen for its safe military infrastructure and architecture because, except for the medieval part recently opened to visitors and under the management of the Department of Culture, the château de Vincennes has mainly been known as a military building under the responsibility of the Department of Defense.

Here is a map showing the areas in central Paris that would be most affected by a major flood: http://capgeo.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Viewer/index.html?appid=1afb6e16cca648fd817e92d3d01ecdf2

I think it will go mostly unnoticed but the point is that it doesn't. They actually want to involve the population, especially businesses, again, to minimize the impact it would have on the economy, so they say they want the population informed and prepared.

After all, no one was prepared for the 2003 heat wave, because it had never happened before. A major flood paralyzing parts of Paris has happened every century and is bound to happen again so the authorities want to be responsible about it and inform the population.

If you click on the first link I gave in my original post, you can see they have done similar drills in other European cities/countries in the last few years: London in 2011, Denmark and Austria in 2013 and Croatia in 2015. It is part of a large EU program of coordinated civil rescue. In London, they said: "We must be willing to tell the public everything. A lack of transparency or precision will expose the public to risks".

So it is the same, it is something that they want advertised and shared, to raise awareness.

For some reason I didn't see the color-coded key for the map. When I saw shading almost to the Luxembourg Gardens I couldn't believe it, but I now understand how flooding in the lower areas could affect the electrical systems elsewhere.

I wonder what assumptions were made for this type of flooding. For example, is this based on areas that were seriously flooded previously?
