Warning to Parents re TV

Now this may no longer be true and I'm sure the Local Experts can tell us more.

However: Parents, especilly with young children Do not let your children surf the channels. Or you might have some serious explaining to do.

I don't know if this is true at all hotels, or if it a cable thing but some channels in Paris are what in the states would not be allowed and what we would consider XXX rated. Usually these are pay stations and it is just for a few seconds but even then they are quite graphic.

My boss's mother came to the office with her eyes big as saucers. "do you know what I saw on TV?" We laughed and said "yeah and you probably went back to it again".

Gosh , you have to be careful even here about that, after about 9 pm there are channels ( Spike and Showcase to name two) that have porn type stuff on them. !!

What pennymb is talking about is NOT your normal HBO/Cinemax or Spike stuff. It's definitely much more "hard core". I was surprised by that on our recent trip. Someone else has posted the warning before, but if you're of a sensitive nature and/or your kids are young, it's very good advice and needs repeating.

Being careful about what your kids see on TV is good advice and I agree with 1BCTraveler.

The "porn" doesn't bother me as much as the kids seeing Arnold Shwartzshooter cutting off someone's head with an AK-47. THAT'S what SHOULD get the attention of parents IMHO.

The kids will learn the sexual aspects of human life with or without the TV and, with or without their parent's knowledge.

Parents need to provide the information young people need if they don't want them seeking it on their own. The more they know, the better decisions they'll make as they grow into adulthood. European kids are much better adjusted and much less violent than American kids from what I can see. Maybe the French know something we don't..?

Something I found much worse than the XXX flicks was the NEWS. I happened to see footage of a blackhawk Helicopter's pilots and crew that had been shot down in a villiage and the locals pulled them out and was dragging one crew member around by a rope and I can't say anymore of how bad it was and how it effected Me. I wasn't ready for it, no warning nothing, just right there in your face. Worse part was the fact I was with 35 High School Students who I prayed would not witness the film clip I happen to stumble on.

I'm no wimp and I have seen so terrible things, but this was the worst. Unlike America, there is not much cencorship on TV through out Europe.

And the fact that there is less censorship on European TV is a *very* commendable thing about the Olde Worlde, imho.

1) If your kids are watchig tv while visiting Paris, then they are not visiting enough of the city!?!

2) I know a local expat Mom who also avoids the metro with the kids because there are occasionally ads featuing topless women.

3) This Local Expert does nothave tv and can therefore offer absolutely no comment on local content.
