vernet les bains any information

Hi,

I am organising a holiday to France for July 2009 with a group of friends. there will be around 22 of us ranging in age from 10-60. We have seen a lovely house (former inn) in Vernet les Baiin which would certainly suit us as regards accomodation but I wondered about the area. Does anyone have any experience of it. i know it is quite high up so that you can go for mountain walks and while we want to laze by the pool we will also want to visit cafes and do some sightseeing. Any information gratefully received

Vernet is not really high up, maybe 500m above sea-level but it is in a very green valley at the foot of the Pyrenees. It is a small town with hot springs (respiratory ailments), a Casino, grottos near-by, close to two cistercian abbeyes (Saint Martin du Canigou and Saint Michel de Cuxa) and to Villefranche de Conflent (the Little Yellow Train)

From Vernet you can either drive up to Font-Romeu and Spain or down to Prades and the beaches (40 km either way). In other words, you can make a lot of day-trips if you have a car or nice hikes if you like to walk.

There are several supermarkets in Prades, 8 km away.

I don't think it is very famous for its wild night-life !

Villefranche is a historic walled town. Enter by the east gate, turn right and the bar in front supports the firefighters who deal with fires on the mountains. Continue left past the bar and 100m or so on the right is an alley leading to the river, a small footbridge, and a stone cash desk. This is where you pay to enter the underground stairway which climbs hundreds of steps to the fort. Great views of the town and valleys. There is a shuttle bus but it is nowhere near as interesting.

The Little Yellow Train initially clings high up the 'V' shaped mountain side, crosses a chasm on a narrow bridge, and after Font Romeu descends steeply to a plain. Very scenic. The train sounds as if it is powered by a man hitting an anvil with a hammer.

Just before Villefranche is the Grottes de Canalettes, a cave system which has a sound and light show deep underground.

Towards the coast is Thuir which has guided tours around the distillery which produces many different beverages.

A little further is a large wine co-op at Trouillas. It produces a variety of wines, the rose was particularly good.

Vernet may be a bit rural but you can find things to do. The N116 towards Font Romeau can be very busy with goods vehicles (slow on the steep hills) in peak season at certain times of day.

Hope this helps your planning.

Hi,

and thanks for the information. There certainly seems to be sufficient for some day trips. We don't really want to be driving for more than 1hr 30mins to get places! Although the supermarkets are a few kms away - are there any food shops and or bakeries in Vernet Les bains and also we would like to be able to go out for dinner at least once to somewhere we didn't have to drive to.

Also how long would it take to get there from either Carcassonne ot Perpingnon

thanks again

" We don't really want to be driving for more than 1hr 30mins to get places!"

You won't : from Vernet to the nearest beach is approx 60 km and the road is very good. From Vernet to Font-Romeu is a bit less but will take as much time because the road is winding and you have to drive up to 1800m.

"are there any food shops and or bakeries in Vernet"

Yes of course. Food shops will be smaller and more expensive than the supermarkets in Prades. No problem for bakeries.

"we would like to be able to go out for dinner at least once to somewhere we didn't have to drive to."

There is 'among several others) a very nice restaurant in Vernet called "Au Comte Guifred de Conflent". It is part of a training school for hotel/restaurant staff. The food is excellent and the price very reasonable. It is advisable to make a reservation 1 or 2 days in advance.

In Villefranche, just 4 or 5 km away, try "Auberge de Saint-Paul", owned by one of the few women chefs.

"Also how long would it take to get there from either Carcassonne ot Perpingnon "

:

Carcassonne to Perpignan by car : 1 hour if you take the motorway, a bit more if you take the regular road which is excellent.

Perpignan to Vernet : 45 mn to 1 hour.

thanks again Pvoyageuse, vernet les bain sounds as if it could suit us very well. I found an 'official' website this afternoon and it listed the numbers of shops and services they had there and there seems to be more than enough to suit us

thanks again
