Pezenas or Sete

we have a week in Languedoc next June

We have 2 days in Albi, 2 in Millau and want to spend the other 3 on the eastern side of the region near the coast. Can't decide between Pezenas or Sete .Any advice

Pezenas is a way inland with nice architecture and an interesting recent history. It has become rather gentrified and has lots of craft shops catering to tourists.

Sete is a working fishing and ferry port. Originally an island, it is now connected to the mainland by sand spits. Founded by the Greeks, today it has a raffish charm.

Photos of the area :

Both have plenty of good, but not outstanding restaurants. Sete is closer to the A9 autoroute which is the main road route in the area.

I'd look at staying in Sete, or as a third idea in Bouzigues. Bouzigues is a fishing village (between Sete and the autoroute), with a few hotels and sea food restaurants. This is an interesting hotel : http://www.la-cote-bleue.fr/us/index.html . It has a restaurant and the family are also are producers of oysters & mussels.

Well said mpprh, this describes Sete exactly. There are several hotels on Sete's south side (on the coast) which are more modern and might be more comfortable than those in town but either way I should prefer Sete as a base for exploring over Pezenas.

There are several interesting destinations within a short drive from Sete, particularly those towns on the northwest of the Etang de Thau: Marseillan (home of Noilly Pratt), Meze (excellent restaurants dot the circumference of the town's port), and Bouzigues (known for the oyster from the lake).
