wedding in south of france

Just looking for ideas for getting married in the south of france. We're irish, in our mid 30's, planning a small family wedding 20-30 guests, love great food, old world charm, romantic scenery, not afraid to get off the beaten track. Wondering if it can be done on a reasonable budget. Thinking late september. Any ideas please ??? Don't really have to confine ourselves to this particular region, thought the cote d'azur might be a bit flashy/expensive, haven't been there so can't say.

I assume you do already know of the residency requirements for weddings in France. Here are some places to look for ideas about a ceremony:

I know nothing of organising weddings in France, but a lovely place to stay, which would be about the size you are looking for is Le Couvent d'Herepian. The area is gorgeous and between the mountains of the Haut Languedoc and the vineyards of the Beziers plain.

do keep in mind that if you marry in France (if you can meet the legal requirements, which are daunting) you then fall under French law regarding everything regarding your marriage -- property law, inheritance, divorce, custody of children, etc.,e tc., etc.

It might be less complicated (on multiple levels) to have a small ceremony in Ireland, then have a lovely honeymoon in France.

"Destination weddings" are all the rage these days, but the little-known secret is that there are so many legal loopholes to jump through and the cost is so high that most couples do a secret private civil quickie ceremony before they leave and have a "pretend" wedding abroad. Their guests think they are seeing the real thing and the couple celebrates the date of the public ceremony as their anniversary from then on.

As for a destination, a big thing to consider would be easy access for your guests -- e.g. RyanAir direct flight from Cork to Carcassonne. I would look at the discount air routes from your part of Ireland and THEN look around that area of France for a venue that fits.

Congratulations! Southern France would be lovely in September.
