The classic thing is to buy them a plastic sword each and let them 'joust' their way around!!

Does anyone know about a sort of medieval re-enactment/dress-up days they have for kids at Carcassonne castle? We at also travelling there in mid September 2012 with our 7 & 9 yr old children and heard about these activities, but I can't seem to find anything about it online. Any info would be appreciated!

If it's a rainy day and your kids are a bit smaller, there's a good soft play area in the Pont Rouge area at the north of Carcassonne:

Or there are some amazing caves to explore:

If you are up for a bit of driving there's the Dinosaur Museum:

Or the African Safari park:

If it's mid-summer, and getting too hot, then take a trip up to the cooler climes of the Montagne Noire just to the north of Carcassonne, there is a nice swimming lake by Pradelle (and another on the way over to Mazamet):

My family are in the area fairly frequently, does anyone know of any English speaking kids clubs?

If anyone is going this summer (2013) then do see the jousting event in the castle, like most things in France, not cheap, but worth every euro! Very dramatic with beautiful horses and lots of splintering wood. All in French but even younger kids will get what's going on with a bit of help.

What! Kids love it. It is a castle. How authetically restored is any castle. There are lakes, animal parks, swimmng pools and beaches. The medieval city boasts many wide eyed blissed out children. More children focused festivals would be warmy welcomed but the Meideval city is overwhelmingly a family destination.
