Supermarkets and shopping

Hi

After many years of day trips and short stays in Carcassonne, we are treating ourselves to a fortnight this Summer. Self catering just outside La Cite walls.

At the moment we are trying to decide whether to hire a car (we usually drive down but think we might fly this year) and want to do this early enough to get good price if we do decide to.

We're happy that we can keep ourselves entertained in the area without a car, my only concern is shopping! It isn't the local produce etc as we will use market and local shops, but the bulkier stuff like wine, beer, drinks for the younger family members etc. I haven't paid any attention in the past to prices in the smaller supermarkets in la Bastide, and the one near the station, so just wondered if anyone knows if these places are similar in price to the hypermarkets, or if we will find that we spend lots more on groceries if we don't have access to a car (carrying shopping not a problem as there is 5-6 of us!)

Thanks

Off the top of my head the hypermarkets in France are cheaper than the smaller stores, but of course getting to many of them without a car is well nigh impossible. You will have to weigh up the cost of a taxi to bring you back with your shopping against what you would spend locally.

I don't drive and I confess to not having been to the out of town hypermarkets during my visits.

Some shops do deliveries. Check with your host if they have an account or would be able to create one.

Without a car, I find a Rolser very handy.

Supermachés are listed here:

The itinéraire option can tell you more.

Shopping at further afield Leclerc or Géant Casino may require a bus trip.

Thanks for all your replies. We've realised how easy it should be to get to a supermarket by bus, and we have been known to jump on the little train with a box of beer, so think we will go carless.

There are a few big supermarkets not far from the 'cite', so as you said there are several of you to carry, a nice walk down to the "geant" or even the Lidl next door - you can still get better prices without the car - enjoy your stay!
