Nimes or Uzes?

We have just booked cheap flights to Nimes. Which is the nicest town to stay, Nimes or Uzes? Also, can anyone recommend a good chambre d'hote - what we want is somewhere that we can walk to a restaurant in the evening if possible. Nearby villages with a restaurant would also be good. Also, how warm is it usually late September?

thanks in anticipation

Both central Nimes and Uzes have plenty of restaurants within walking distance.

Nimes has more attractions, hotels, clubs, restaurants etc and is easily reached by shuttle bus from the airport. Uzes is quieter and more gentile. Think Chester v Liverpool !

Getting to Uzes means changing buses in Nimes : www.edgard-transport.fr/ftp/FR_lignes/E52.pdf . Uzes is about 1hr from Nimes.

September is a month of change -

Temperatures can range from 10C (night) to 35C (day). Realistically it will probably be 15C - 25C. Nimes is normally slightly warmer than Uzes. On average, September is a wet month. However, most rain falls in the form of overnight storms. UK type grey drizzle is very rare in this part of France.

You haven't said what your interests are. You could consider staying on the coast, or in the Cevennes. Bus services tend to be geared to school hours which may restrict your options.

Most villages are small with few facilities. Places worth researching -

Aigues Mortes

Grau de Roi

Grande Motte

St Gilles

Avignon

Arles

Beaucaire

Tarascon

Sommieres ( Hotel de l'Orange)

Gallargues le Montueux (Croque au Sel)

Calvisson

Caveirac

Montpellier

Anduze

Bagnols s Ceze

Bonne chance

Thanks for your help Peter, much appreciated!

We will be hiring a car so hope to visit both the coast and a few towns/villages but we prefer to have a meal in the evening without worrying about a glass of wine or two!

Sounds like the weather could be perfect for travelling around.

Thanks, carol

I'd think about Sommieres.

It is central being under 30 minutes to Nimes, Montpellier, Med beaches and Anduze (Cevennes). It has a medieval pedestrian area with about 8 bars and 20 restaurants.

Check out the Hotel de l'Orange :

It is the building with the pool :

It has a car park

Sommieres punches above its weight. It is the market town serving surrounding villages and was the bridging point on the main road from Nimes to Montpellier. It has a cabaret bar, cinema, bullring and market (charter 1065).

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for all the info - Sommieres looks just the sort of place we like! I have just emailed the Hotel L'Estelou - it looks lovely.

Looking forward to the break,

Thanks, Carol

It is a short walk into the medeival centre, but has good parking.

Check here :

I live nearby. I will be in the market tomorrow.
