Castelnaudary to Madrid via the Pyrenees

We will be leaving our Le Boat trip in Castelnaudary and want to see the Pyrenees en route to Madrid. Would bus be best for us and any other words of advice? We only have two and a half days to get there.

What bus are you purposing to take to Madrid? As far as I know, there are only two options, drive yourself or take the train. If you are not planning some type of car rental, the train is possibly your only option. You can check schedules here:

There is a Eurolines bus from Toulouse but it runs at night., leaving Toulouse at 0030hrs and not every night. It takes 12 hours to get to Madrid. So you wouldn't see anything.

The best way to see the Pyrenees by train is to take the local line from Toulouse to Latour de Carol, then the local Spanish train from there to Barcelona. Add the train journey from Castelnaudary to Toulouse and that trip will basically take all day. You could then stay a night in Barcelona and take the AVE high speed train to Madrid the next day. (Reservation compulsory for AVE trains - see www.renfe.com)

For more information on this slow but very scenic route take a read of this Trip Advisor page

Do check all the details at relevant websites as they may change.

The fast trains between France and Spain go around the outside of the mountains at present and through a long tunnel across the border. You get distant views of the mountains only.

One way car rental between France and Spain can be very expensive.
