Paris to Lourdes

Hi' We're traveling from Disneyland Paris to Lourdes this September 2014 and Lourdes to Paris CDG Airport, would appreciate if someone can recommend us the best transport, we're thinking of taking train from Disneyland Paris to Lourdes and via air for Lourdes to Paris CDG Airport. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know all the trains from Lourdes to Paris go via Gare Montparnasse. So if you are in Disney, you'll have to go to Paris to that particular station to catch the train and vice versa. To familiarize yourself with travel in and out of Lourdes and other important facts on the town, do read the carefully prepared FAQ sheet prepared by Destination Expert hospitallier which is on the right side of this page:

Be aware that if you take a one way flight from Lourdes to Paris (ORY) the fare will be approximately 3 times more than if you take a return.

It is better to travel by train than by air, Lourdes airport has very few flights a day and is located in between Tarbes and Lourdes next to some farm lands, not very accessible other than by cab or by the hourly bus. The train schedule between Lourdes and Paris is very frequent and depending on the date/time you travel, the train fare can be as low as 25 euro. Download the Voyages-SNCF App on IPAD, it is easy to use.

Use www.capitainetrain.com and try both CDG to Lourdes and Paris to Lourdes.

See what options you get each way.

Although you won't find a direct TGV high-speed train from CDG to Lourdes, you'll find journey options by TGVs with one easy change in Bordeaux. This would avoid going in to central Paris on the grotty RER express metro, so it's easier.

However, the direct Paris-Lourdes TGV trains will be faster and more frequent, but obviously that means taking the every-15-minutes RER train from CDG into central Paris to join the TGV at Paris Montparnasse. But there's something nice about joining an express across France at its proper Paris terminus, where its journey starts. There's a cafe-bar on board, or feel free to take your own picnic and bottle of wine.

Either way, allow PLENTY of time between any flight and a train, to allow for any flight delay and immigration queues and so forth. The cheap train tickets mean limited or no changes or refunds, specific train only.

Trains from Lourdes to Paris Montparnasse takes about 6 hrs, whereas Lourdes to CDG takes 9+ hrs as most of the time it involves 2 changes. Those with 1 change also take 7 to 9 hrs depending on the schedule.

If you are staying near Disneyland it does makes sense to take the TGV from the Gare de Marne-la-Vallée – Chessy station to Lourdes which is near the entrance of the park. Again most schedule involves 2 changes either at Lyon/Toulouse or Bordeaux/Byonne and can takes up to 9+ hrs.

You can find all the schedules on the website of Voyages-sncf, make sure you choose the country where you collect the ticket as France as otherwise it will be redirected to Rail Europe which costs more for the same ticket!

Advantage in using the IPAD App is you can buy and save the eTicket on the device for many of the routes, as well as the searches for different routes.

Cheapest tickets are those bought three months ahead. Use as advised by Man in Seat 61 in post #4 the site www.capitainetrain.com

65 Euros for 800km is not such a bad price surely? Cheaper tickets may be available, but you must buy them as soon as the 90 day reservations window opens. And then the very cheapest tickets may not be refundable or exchangeable if anything happens to make you have to change your plans.

The closer it gets to day of travel the more expensive the tickets become. At very busy times there may be none left at all.

Seat reservation is compulsory.
