Is it reasonab le to try to see both Rocamadour and Conques on the same day? Is public transportation available, or must we drive?
www.viamichelin.com says it's about 2-1/2 hours -- whether that makes it possible or not is up to you.
You'll have to drive -- public transportation is spotty at best, and what is there is scheduled for local commuters and schoolchildren.
You will need a whole day if you want to enjoy exploring the town of Rocamadour and 1/2 day for the village of Conques. It is very difficult to visit these 2 places on the same day by public transportation if there is any. You need to rent a car if you really want to visit these places on the same day.
can you get a coach or taxi from conques to rocamadour ?Edited: 15 March 2013, 01:38
You need to drive.
>>can you get a coach or taxi from conques to rocamadour ?<<
There are very few (if any) long-distance coach services within France, and certainly not linking two such minor villages.
I have some doubt as to whether there would be taxis available in either Conques or Rocamadour. Even if there were, the distance is some 90 km, so the cost would be around €200.
I totally agree with the answer above that you might want to stay 1 full day in Rocamadour. It is well worth visiting the cathedral (look above the entrance door and you will see Roland's sword - a replica but do not think about it this way! ) and the village itself.
Conques is smaller but nice nevertheless.
And yes, you need a car.
