Battlefields from Lille

We will be staying in Lille next week for 4 days and would love to visit some Battlefields. Most tours do not seem to operate during the month of January?

We do not mind travelling by train on our own to find some, but is this possible??

Please help we will be leaving in a days time :(

Many thanks.....

I don't know what websites you've been looking at for guided tours of the battlefields but if you haven't seen it already then look at this one:

http://www.somme-battlefields.com/

And a few more links to research:

www.lilletourism.com/info-1-0-494-gb.html

greatwar.co.uk/organizations/battlefield-tou…

viator.com/Lille-tourism/…d824-t1855

Trains will get you between towns and cities but not to battlefields. If you can't find a guided tour then you would need to rent a car to visit the battlefields and their associated monuments/cemeteries. You can check www.autoeurope.com for car rental info.

If you want to travel by train here is one suggestion:

You can get from Lille Flanders station to Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium in slightly over one hour's travel, including a change in Kortrijk (Courtrai). From Ypres you can visit several WW1 sites including the Yorkshire Trench, which is only 4 kms from Ypres, so walkable if you are fit, or take a taxi:

From the railway station in Ieper (Ypres) it is possible to get a bus to a stop 5 minutes walk from Tyne Cot Cemetery, or to Messines Ridge.

Alternatively there is Salient Tours (http://www.salienttours.be) who run daily tours of the battlefields all year round.

We are staying in Arromanches and would like to visit Lille to See the Tour de France pass through on July 8.

Does anyone know about how long a drive it is to Lille from Arromanches? Is it a difficult drive? Thank very much!

Plot a route using viamichelin or Google maps. Driving in France is not difficult but watch your speed as cameras are common.
