Rental cars with automatic transmission?

Has anyone rented a car with automatic transmission in Bayeux? (Or in Caen)? They seem very difficult to find, and would appreciate knowing who - if anyone - offers them.

Check with Autoeurope:

Keep in mind automatics cost more in general.

Cars with AT will cost more, are taxed higher (watch the environmental fee), and are never guaranteed to be available when you arrive for pickup.

If you really must have a car with AT, prepare for eventuality that one may not actually be available in spite of what your reservation may say.

How long do you want to have the car? If you will ned the car for 17+ days ( or in some instances 21+ days), you may want to consider the Lease/Purchase option. Why? Because you get a brand new car, with exactly the options that you want, including model, transmission type, fuel, etc - virtually everything except color.

Your chances of getting an AT car in Bayeux are greater than zero by an infinitesimally small amount. The rental agencies in Bayeux, such as they are, are of the local service station type. Most rentals will be to locals needing something to cover them for a day or two while their car is being repaired. I wouldn't try to rent any car there.

You might have a better chance at Caen but as Sarastro says your only guarantee that you will have a car that you can drive will be to learn to drive a stick-shift. It really isn't that difficult...

There *may* be very high end cars available from some companies in places like Paris and perhaps Nice that come only in AT configuration. I do not know for sure. If there are they would be very expensive and are the exact antithess of what I would recommend for exploring in France, namely the smallest car that can accommodate your party in reasonable comfort. The most interesting roads in France are narrow and the streets of some of the medieval villages often barely wide enough for two horsemen to ride abreast.

We have always hired AT cars from Europcar in Paris & never had a problem.

I think the other posters are pointing out that there's a BIG difference between renting in Paris and renting in Bayeux or Caen.

PaulNY-

If you're going to be there for a while, or plan to make multiple trips to France or elsewhere in Europe that include car rentals, have you considered finding a friend who has an old car with standard and learning to drive one? It wouldn't take that long. For the money you would save on the rental fees you could probably hire someone (Craigslist?) who would teach you to drive a stick in their car? Just a thought.

there's always the killer clause on the reservation for an automatic transmission: subject to availability.

They'll try to have an AT car for you, but they won't ever guarantee it.

You won't find one in Bayeux; Might do with Hertz, Avis or Europcar in Caen.

As others have pointed out you should have even more chance in Paris.

Perhaps it's all chance, but we were able to get a rental car with automatic transmission a few years ago in Caen, from Europcar. Pickup was right outside the train station; we returned ours in Rouen. I think Bayeux will be way too small for any decent availability or range of options.

Your best bet for actually getting a car with automatic transmission is at a major airport.
