Define "properly".

You can get a feel for it and pay your respects in one day, or you could spend a week or more following the route of the advance inland.

Do you want to visit all the D-Day landing beaches or just the Omaha Beach area?

We would be happy with just one of the beaches in order to save time and money.

To poster no. 4, if you are traveling solo and want to follow the route of the invasion, I would recommend that you take a small group tour for 1/2 or one full day. The area of the invasion is very dispersed, and not readily accessible by public transportation. One needs to drive from point to point.
