looking to bike around loire valley

My husband and I are planning our first France trip for the fall. We are going to spend 6 nights in Paris, and would like to add 3 - 4 nights in the Loire Valley. We would prefer not to drive. We would like to take a train to Blois or Amboise, and then use bus or taxi to hotel. We then would like to get around by bicycle.

Anyone recommend any self-guided bike tours? What city would be the best place to get to without a car, and then for getting around via bike? We would like to see a few of the big chateax and perhaps a winery.

I had looked into some of the guided bike tours, but most were quite expensive.

The local tourist bureau has "le loire a velo", which is self guided series of bike routes

If you're reasonably adept at cycling you should look at staying outside of the towns. You should be able to find a gite owner who will pick you up at the station, take you to the gite, and it is quite possible that will have bikes available too.

I would not rcommend staying in Amboise if cycling is going to be your main method of transport, as there are far too many coaches, driven by people from far too many countries.

You do not define what you mean as "expensive" bike tours. We have have done 3 self guided tours in Europe and have found the all inclusive cost to be reasonable, The most important thing is you get clean accommodation and safe, scenic routes to ride on. Most important your bags get moved from location yo location.

We have used Randonnee Tours in the Dordonne and would recommend them. They offer a 4 day tour in the Loire at $ 710 to $1200 depending on the level of accommodation you choose.

As above your budget is not clear but I can recommend www.loirevalleybreaks.com for their great location, accommodation, pricing and knowledge of the area.

Thank you everyone for the replies. The randonee or loire valley breaks seem like the best option for us.
