Suggested driving itinerary - out of Orleans

Hi all,

We're arriving on a Monday morning (overnight train) in Orleans, to drive around the Loire Valley. Departing via train again on Thursday from Orleans.

We have two nights accomodation already planned in Vouvray and MUST go to Villandry.

I'd love to hear your driving itinerary suggestions.

And also any recommendation for a fancy (but not ludicrously expensive) Chateaux for one night's accommodation to surprise my boys (husband and number one son).

I don't want to end up criss-crossing across the waterways and ending up very inefficient driving. Or maybe that will not be a problem - hopefully you can advise!

Thanks, MissApples

There are probably 100 different itineraries you could consider so instead of suggesting one I'll give you some resources you can use to learn about what there is to see and do in that region. Then you can visit those places that most interest you. Have a look at this thread and it will give you all the major tourist office websites for that part of the Loire:

To find a château that might interest you for an overnight try these sites:

Orléans is in the far east of the region and not much around so you will have to head west ( or try to train to Tours instead of Orléans would even be better )

Which 2 nights do you stay in Vouvray ?

Passing on the nort side of the Loire river one way and south the other way is probably the best thing to do.

But most of the places to see are south of the Loire. Don't worry about crossing often the river when you'll be around Tours/Vouvray as places are close by and crossing the river easy. Once you'll know what you want to see, it will be easier to help you out on the details :-)

Here are other links to help you out deciding what you want to see in the Loire Valley :

Thanks French_Mystique and plannerHaolic for all that information. It's really that I do have so much information at hand that I was more interested in people's own experience, what they enjoyed doing and would recommend.

We're stuck with Orleans as we are coming from Spain on the overnighter. Very useful also to know that it shouldn't be a problem south or north of the river as crossing around Tours are easy. Thanks, I was worried about that.

I'm not set in stone with the nights in Vouvray as yet - I'm trying to be flexible so that if say someone recommended chateau accommodation near Saumur I would work the nights around that, or if somewhere closer to Orleans was recommended, then we would stay there for the first night (or maybe the last) and then drive out to the west and work our way back.

If anything I'm struggling with the amount of choices available!

Since most of the thing to see and do are between Blois and Saumur, I wouldn't stay too long around Orléans. Going towards Tours you have Blois a little bit further north you also have Vendôme which is nice.

You have multiple crossing possibilities along the Loire River. But if you are not set on Vouvray. Since you most of the things to see is across the River, if you want to minimize the number of time you'll be crossing the River you might want to look at other possibilities in the area.

For the small amount of time that you have, I personally would not go as far as Saumur. Depending if you prefer a larger or smaller town you might want to consider either Tours ( but more traffic to deal with ) or Azay-le-Rideau pretty much in the middle of Chinon, Langeais, Villandry, Ussé, Chenonceau, Amboise if you wish to and also Vouvray that wouldn't be too far.

On you way back to Orléans, you would check out Cheverny, Chaumont, Chambord...

Thanks plannerHaolic, that is great advice and good for the central location suggestions. I appreciate your comments. So definitely sounds like it would be inefficient use of our time to try and include the tapestries in Angers. Will probaly in that case stay in a circle around Tours. thanks for suggesting Azay-le-Rideau as central.

thanks, MissApples
