Best village to stay in for cycling

Hi

We (2 adults, 1 7 yr old) are travelling to the Loire in early July, and would like to base ourselves somewhere close to the Loire a velo and train station. perhaps in a small town, so that we can explore by bike and train. Originally I had thought Amboise might be good, but it is quite expensive that time of year, while locations in smaller places are less expensive and also quieter/more relaxing. The 7 year old will be on a tag along.

Can anyone recommend some good villages/towns to stay in for this purpose and/or self catering accomodation?

Thank you :)

If you want to bring your bikes on a train then the best place to base in the Loire is Tours. I've answered questions on other threads about biking in the Loire and I'm going to give you links to those threads rather than have to re-write all that info here. You'll see why I say Tours makes the best base if you are exploring that region by bike or without a car. Pay attention to my advice about using Michelin maps to plan bike itineraries. All the info you'll need about how to bring bikes on trains is in there too. There's a lot of other info in these threads and links to other sources of info. If basing in Tours you'll want to be in the old downtown (nice place with a medieval feel) in/near Place Plumereau. You can google some photos to see how nice this area is.

For accommodation info in Tours you can check the tourist office website:

If you're going to be using trains and buses to get around the Loire and want to stay someplace besides Tours you'll need to be someplace that's on a rail line and other places I would recommend would be Blois, Chinon, Loches and Amboise. The tourist office websites have accommodation info and loads of other research info. I know you'd like to stay in a small town or village but you really can't stay in these places without renting a car because you'll have very limited public transport options.

Thanks - info much appreciated. I had hoped we could stay in a village close to a main town and maybe just hire a car for a few days. I'll read up on the links you've provided.

Oh, well if you're going to hire a car then that changes everything. From your post it seemed like you were going to rely on public transport to get around the region but if you have a car you can stay anywhere.

If you have a car forget Tours. If you want to stay in a town that has a wide variety of stores, restos, services etc. then I still recommend Blois, Loches, Chinon or Amboise as these provide those amenities. Places smaller than this aren't going to have a lot of choice for restos and such but if that's not a problem for you then these places are fine. You could also stay somewhere a bit rural out in the countryside too. I don't know which of these options suits you but if you mention your preference I might have a few suggestions.

Here is a link to a thread that has links to all the tourist office websites in the Loire. You'll find these websites are a fantastic planning resource. There are also links to websites with info about châteaux, wine, food, local products etc.

As far as where you might base that entirely depends on the places/sites you want to visit so focus on a base that will be central to your activities. I'll suggest you search The Loire forum here on TA since the question "Where should I base/what should I do in the Loire" is a frequently asked question so there are many threads that discuss these issues and provide answers.

As far as accommodation info the tourist office websites have a lot that but there are also many websites where you can search for self-catering accommodation in France. The three that I always use are:

Thanks - we're going for 10 days and maybe hiring a car for two or 3 so central is still good. I'll check out your links.

Thanks :)
