Rent car or take train to saumur from cdg or Paris?

We are thinking of a last minute trip to Loire valley. Saw a place I am interested in renting in Saumur, but want to ask about transportation. We have 2 adults and 3 children. Would it be best to take a train from Paris to Saumur and then rent a car? Or just rent in Pris and drive down? We want to see the castles in the Loirs Valley. Would this be a good base? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you so much! We have about a week to spend in the Loire valley, btw.

Also, we could go to Paris first, then travel to Saumur,,and then return to Cdg for our flight home.

There are no trains from CDG or Paris direct to Saumur. You would have to change trains at Angers or St-Pierre-des-Corps (just outside Tours).

You would do best to take a train to St-Pierre-des-Corps and rent a car there. A train from Paris to St-Pierre takes about an hour, whereas the journey by car would take over 2.5 hours of driving (plus stops) along busy and boring toll motorway.

For the best prices on train travel, book now. Tickets for October went on sale in July, and the cheapest tickets will have sold out long ago. You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, at en.voyages-sncf.com/en but use Antarctic at the "Ticket collection country" to avoid being transferred to RailEurope USA, which has higher prices and does not list all the trains.

If you have trouble with voyages-sncf, www.capitainetrain.com is a private website which links directly to the SNCF ticketing system.

Take a train to St-Pierres-des-Corps and rent a car there.

If you go directly without visiting Paris first take the train for safety's sake. Since there are 5 of you I would spend a couple of days in Paris & then rent the car.

Thank you all so much for your replies. We are going to first spend 3 mp nights in Paris, then go down to the Loire Valley. We will most likely take the train, since that has been the overwhelming advice. Is it cheaper to rent at St. Pierre-des-Corps than in Paris? We will then most likely, on our last night go to CDG and stay at a hotel there.

And would you recommend Amboise or Saumur or any other areas for a family with 3 boys, as a base for our time in the Loire Valley? We have been to Chartes and Chambourd in the past, but want to get to other castles in the area. We would love to ride bikes one day, too. Thanks so much for any help you can swing my way!

The cost of a car rental depends more on the rental company you use and the kind of car, rather than the pickup location. Book the car in advance: walkup prices cost much more. See www.autoeurope.com

Saumur is really a bit far west for visiting the chateaux. Amboise could be convenient, but you have to go through or past Tours to get to anywhere west of Tours. We enjoyed staying at Loches, from where we could take a drive to chateaux either east or west of Tours.

Before you commit to staying in Saumur, determine where it is you want to go and what you want to visit. Then check the drive times between Saumur and your travel destinations. For me, Saumur is a long drive to many of the most popular destinations of the Loire Valley. For driving times, you might want to check here:
