Provence newbies - 5 days in Provence - suggested base?

We are planning on a short vacation on the tail end of visiting my family in Germany. We plan to visit Provence and Barcelona for approx. 10 days at the end of June, and do not plan on using an automobile. We would love to have some suggestions for a home base, for a day trip to a beach, anything that can be done without renting an automobile.

Any suggestions for locations, home bases, things to see, etc. Tips about our interests: wine, history, relaxation, some shopping, food and cooking.

Thanks in advance!

Paul

Hi Paul,

In order to provide you with the best/most valid recommendations, we need to know how long you want to be in Provence and how many people will be in your group.

Personally, I would urge you seriously reconsider your decision to visit the area without a car, since there are many places that are virtually inaccessable without one.

Its is a big area and not to hire a car will be to miss out on an awful lot of what Provence has to offer.

For example some of the best beaches in the Camargue can realistically only be reached by car. Public transport is infrequent to the smaller villages.

That said if you are only spending say 5 days in the area and are happy to limit yourselves to the major attractions and cities that are served by puplic transport then I would pick Avignon, Arles or Aix as a base probably splitting the stay between either in Avignon or Aix before moving to Arles which is in the general direction of Spain.

If you're only spending five days in Provence, you could easily find plenty to do and see by staying in one of the larger cities or towns with good public transport connections. Avignon, Aix, Marseille and Arles are fascinating places in their own right and all worth spending at least one or two days in. They would offer links to the surrounding area, especially Marseille, which has a network of trains, busses and boats fanning out from it (if staying there, the coastal boat trip along the calanques is a must). If you want to visit a lot of villages and tour remote country places, you would be better off with a car, though.
