Antibes in June- hiking?

We will be in Antibes in June for a 4 day conference. Is there much to do there if we aren’t beach people?

After the conference we would like to spend a few days hiking. Is Provence too hot for hiking in June? What would be the closest place that would be good for hiking in June?

Thanks!

Hi,

Lucky you Antibes is lovely.

It depends what you mean by hiking. There is a lovely walk that meanders round the Cap sensible footwear needed.

It starts at La plage Garoupe ( parking is free) and takes you out to the tip of the headland and returns via the treelined streets of the Cap. I think it is called Sentier La Garoupe. Takes about an hour or longer depending on you.

June would be agrat time of year to do this.

Thanks for that information. It sounds like that walk begins in the town or very close to it? We could check it out while in town.

I was actually referring to half or full day hikes away from the city. I read somewhere the summer can be too hot for hiking in Provence, but on weather websites I see the temps in June are usually around 20c, which sounds lovely to me.

We haven’t thought this out yet, but since you sound like you might have information... what would be appropriate for us is 10-12km if the hike is easy (relatively flat terrain) or 6-8km if it is a bit more difficult.

Close to Antibes would be convenient but it is more important to go somewhere pretty where the weather is right. Public transportation is good if that works, but we can rent a car.

You might want to consider the Nietzsche Trail from Eze du Bord to the village of Eze. Once in Eze, the climb through the midievil village is charming and the views from the garden on top are breathtaking.

Here is a TA discussion about the trail:

Just a few suggestions.

Considering the already proposed Nietzsche Trail, I may add that the trail doesn't finish at Eze itself, but goes all the way up to the Mont Bastide. From there the view is even much better.

Take a train to the Trayas station (around 30-40 minutes) and you at the beginning of the climb to the beautiful Massif Esterel, where numerous trails and footpaths can be chosen. The views on the seaside are stunning. That is probably more difficult, but if you rent a car you can drive to a higher starting point.

Or closer to Antibes there is a Gorges de Loup area with lovely perched villages (like Gourdon) and again magnificent views from the heights of up to 1000-1500 meters.

Apart from the local Cap d'Antibes walk and the inland Gorges du Loup already mentioned most walkers head for the La Turbie area just east of Nice and above Monaco. There are stupendous coastal views here.

The Alpes Maritimes Guide offers a lot of detail on walks some of which are in the high back country and of Alpine standard.

The walking ‘season ‘ is normally in the Autumn. June is getting quite hot in places without shade alto' probably nothing you could not cope with in Israel.

for fairly easy walking close to antibes-there are 13 natural parks easily reachable by public transport - some areas almost entirely tree covered so are cool and shady even in the height of summer. Lots of opportunity for nature watching or just general relaxation , country walk

click on the map for info about each park

cg06.fr/fr/…

alos there are coastal walks - around Antibes- cap d'antibes , Nice, cap d'ail cap ferrat etc

alos walks on the iles des Lerins - cross from cannes to by boat from juan les pins

for walks in rougher country in the alpes maritimes but still easy reach from antibes , there is a whole site- walks are graded for abilitty, hight and type of terrain etc

put link into babelsih if you need the site translated

there is a good little book called walk and eat in Nice which gives a about a dozen walks in the area in a tiny sized book
