Travel Tips for Provence

- Book a gite instead of hotel in the Provence. It can be very cost effective.

- Many of the shops in Provence are closed on Sun and Monday. On other days, they might also shut down between 12 and 3pm.

- Be wary of mistral and carry appropriate clothing.

- In the Provence, people hardly speak English. Just ask Parlez Vous Anglais to see if anyone can speak some broken English.

- If you are looking for an automatic car for rental, ensure you pre-book.

- If possible, opt for insurance with zero liability for rental cars. Some of the streets are extremely narrow and there can be scratches quite easily.

- If possible, carry a credit card with chip. Many of the machines won’t accept international credit cards without a chip.

- For tolls on auto routes, small changes can be very handy.

- Carry Michelin roadmaps and also a GPS

- Exercise extreme caution at the roundabouts. Local French rarely indicate at the roundabouts.

- Car break-ins are common at the tourist places. Park your car in a bay which can be easily seen from the street rather than in a remote corner. Don’t leave any bags in the car.

- It’s best to start early for the Provence markets. Around midday, it can get very crowded.

We actually found quite a few people who spoke some English and some who were fluent in the language.

Couple of updates.

A lot of people in Provence speak English - we have long conversations in our local hypermarket with the butcher who speaks excellent english.

A credit card with a chip is essential - no chip, no purchase!

If you get to the markets around mid day most traders are packing up to go.

The only time I have troubles at roundabouts is at lunchtime when the locals are in a rush to get home for food.
