Where to stay near beach with easy day trips to Provence?

We will be visiting the area in late July and have been to the Nice,

Monaco, Cannes etc... many times. We would love to be able to stay near the coast closer to inland towns and see parts of

Provence that are new to us, like Aux and Arles, etc... on day trips.

We like very upscale hotels or guesthouses, any thoughts?

THanks

"Closer to inland towns": how close? Along the Côte d'Azur there are inland towns within a 30-minute drive (Mougins, Grasse, Vence, etc.). Aix-en-Provence and Arles, however, are farther from the coast.

Will you have a car? If you'll be spending much time in western Provence, that's important.

Thank you, we will have a car and have never been to Aix and Arles so

a day trip up that way would be nice to see!

I would consider the beach and Provence to be 2 different "trips". Otherwise you will be spending a lot of time in the car. As Catallus mentions above if you stay further east, this becomes easier, but the beach is not near Aix or Arles.

Try mapping some of your day trips using www.viamichelin.com .

If you want to stay inland on the Cote d'Azur then Le Mas Candile in Mougins is very upmarket. However, Aix-en-provence is about 2 hours drive west of Mougins and Arles another 30 mins further. All of the lovely inland Provence towns are further inland from Aix. Towns such as L'Isle sur la Sorgue, Pernes les Fontaines, Bonnieux, Gordes, Venasque, and so on. If you want to spend time in this part of Provence yet be near the coast, then maybe somewhere like Cassis would work, although you can spend a lot of time driving between the coast and the inland towns.

I love Cassis, small, quaint, picturesque. Nice place to relax after a day of driving, and alot of the towns in Provence are within 2 hours drive.

So, it sounds as if you want to visit Western Provence, but it's not really clear how much time you want to stay there or what sort of things you want to see and do.

There are lots of very up-scale hotels and guesthouses, but we cannot make any really valid recommendations until you let us have an idea about where you want to establish your base - AND how long you will be there.

In order to make valid recommendations regarding where to base yourselves, and, things you may want to to see and do, we really need to know what sorts of sites you enjoy ( ie. Roman ruins, important Medieval sites, Lavender harvest ... ).

Please keep in mind that we need to get feedback from you really soon, since you will be travelling during the really busy travel season for both Provence and the Riviera / Cote d'Azur, and will need to make reservations ASAP !!!

Some really nice places to stay that are not far from where we spend every September inlcude:

La Riboto de Taven in Les Baux-de Provence

La Cabro d'Or

Mas de l'Oulivie

Le Hameau des Baux

Hope to hear from you soon.

Many thanks for every reply.

The problem is that I want to base on the coast by the beach for 4 nights and

take a day trip to inland Provence without incurring an arduous drive.

We would love to see lavender fields, love wine, churches, medieval

villages, but roman ruins not so much.

We will then stay in Paris for 3 nights before flying home.

I am so grateful for the help!

Have you looked at the places you want to see on a map?

You can stay on the coast - Cassis is a good suggestion. But to do this you will have a "drive" to see the Provence that you describe.

What you are asking for doesn't exist, except in the movies.

Yes I was afraid of that.

I guess we will stay by the sea since it will be hot in late July.

I'm afraid that I find the above a bit pessimistic.

I was exactly like you. Love beach towns but want to see Provence as well.

Yes cassis is further than the northern luberon -but from cassis to Aix is about 40-45 minutes and you can drive or take public transport. Very doable To lourmarin is about one and a half hours.

But even closer to Cassis (20-25 minutes) are two lesser known hill-top towns that will give you a taste. Le castellet and la cadiere d'azure.
