Suggestions for Base in Provence and Rental

Our family of 4 (2 adults, a teen and a pre-teen) plan to spend 4-6 weeks in France this summer in southern France and want to visit Avignon, L’Isle sur la Sorgue, Nimes, Cassis, Gigondas, Chateauneuf du Pape, Vaison la Romaine, Fontaine de Vaucluse, Montpelier, St. Remy de Provence, Gordes, and Arles, in descending order of importance to us. We have done the extremely small village trip and, while it was great, for this trip, we are looking for a town that has some restaurants, a weekly market, and more than one bakery something more about the size and with the variety of restaurants, etc. of Chablis. We will have to fly to Morocco for a couple of days and also have to go to Barcelona (both of these trips are for must attend events). Does anyone have suggestions for a village or town that we should use as our base? We would like to rent a house with a pool and high-speed Internet and would also appreciate suggestions for rental agencies or specific properties. Thank you for any suggestions.

4 to 6 weeks--Does this mean you are willing to stay in 2 or 3 places?

We've visited all your wish-list sites and will return again this year. We find relocation to be effective and to achieve your goal a place near Vaison la Romaine and another near St, Remy or Arles would work. VLR has all you are looking for as well as Arles. Both of these locations are within reach of the Marseille airport (for flights to Barcelona and Morocco).

Its none too early to book so its best to establish location first and then research. August is probably already fully booked--and will be crowded.

Good luck.

Well, Chablis only has a couple of thousand citizens, so I would consider that to be relatively small. A month to 6 weeks is a considerable period of time. A couple of bases would work well. Maybe some time in Western Provence and then the Cote d'Azur.

Thank you. We prefer to stay in one place the entire time. We are quite willing to do or overnight trips from that base to get to the places on our list. We will probably drive or take the train to Barcelona but have not decided on that yet. Now that I have some suggestions for towns, I can start narrowing down my search.

Yes, Chablis is small but it has a couple of restaurants and a couple of bakeries, cafes, etc. and a weekly market. We stayed last summer in a place in the Burgundy region where the only businesses were a pharmacy, a bakery, a traiteur and a tabac. So we had to drive to get pretty much any meal that we did not make at home or to go to a cafe, etc. We are trying to find a place that is small but has the variety of restaurants, etc. and then we can select a place within walking distance of the village center. Then, we can walk to do our shopping or to get to a good place to eat and not have to always have a designated driver or even if we have not had anything to drink have to drive 20 to 30 minutes to get back "home."

I tend to like places that are a little larger.

Have a look at Uzes and Bedoin. Both lovely and would tick all of your boxes.

I also like L'Isle sur la Sorgue, which is quite a bit larger....but it has 2 markets a week and it is right on the edge of the gorgeous Luberon.

Since you are going to enjoy an extended stay....make sure you check out a short-term lease for your vehicle. Renault is excellent.
