What wineries are a must visit while staying in Pont du gard

My husband and I and two teenage children are leaving Cannes on the 08/07/14 driving to Pont du gard where we will stay 2 nights. We love wineries and would like to visit a few so some recommendations would be very helpful given there is so many. And any other ideas that are must dos while in the area. Thank you

Pip

It's in an area known for production of good but everyday wine. Winery visits tend to be associated with areas known for exceptional wines.

When you are in the area you may well see signs, usually at small vineyards, offering tastings BUT the expectation is that you will buy a case.

Weekly markets often have stalls offering wine tastings (again small producers) and you can safely partake of these without buying at all or just buying a single bottle.

Here is a list of wineries in Languedoc-Roussillon and specifically around Nîmes :

Look for Les Costieres de Nîmes (AOC) wines.

You are not expected to buy a case of wine.

Thank you for that info, that's handy to know. As I live in a wine growing area in New Zealand and we go to wineries for lunch or just to taste. If tasting you will sometimes be asked for a charge of $5 but this enables you to try all the wines they have in order.. Thanks again

It is considered rude, however, to enjoy a tasting without buying at least a bottle or two. You don't have to buy a case in most instances, but yeah, you should buy something.

And loosen your idea of a tasting -- most wineries (especially those outside of the "big" regions of Champagne and Bordeaux) having a "tasting room" that can range from a nicely-decorated room to a barrel top in the corner of the barn. And no tours -- you'll speak with the winemaker or one of his family members, but you'll probably not see the actual operations, other than whatever you see from where you parked your car.

Oh! Absolutely! the same here in my home town Hawkes bay! If you taste, you're there to buy something as the wine is of good quality and there will almost always be something yummy to buy. We would like to experience the wine barrel in the corner, some wine n cheese and bread would be great. Thank you for your tip and time. Pip

One concept to maximize your experience might be to drive 1 hour west to Claret and have lunch at L'Auberge du Cedre. This is a simple maison d'hote with encyclopaedic wine list. You could write them in advance and see if they would arrange a tasting lunch for you. Your drive would take you through much of the Languedoc wine growing region, including Pic St. Loup. http://www.auberge-du-cedre.com/

That is a great idea! Thanks for that. Do you know of any vineyards close by that also have the ability to try some wine, buy some wine and have any type of food bread n cheese or lunch? The scenery of a vineyard is what I would really like to see n taste....thanks for your time. Regards pip

seriously, in this region, just head down the road...if you see a sign (probably handpainted, possibly badly so) that says "vin à vendre" or "degustation", pull in. That's really all there is to it.
