Central Place to Stay

Just starting to plan our next venture to Europe in Sept. 2015. Would like advice on where to rent an apartment for a week that would be central so that we can travel to all the must see places in Provence Côte d'Azur (Nice, Monaco, Cannes, Eze, Grasse, Marseilles, Avignon) in our rental car. We are Canadian so a couple of hours drive is no big deal for us. Thanks in advance for any help you can give us.

You cannot conveniently visit all these places from one base: they are too far apart. See www.viamichelin.com for information on driving times and costs.

Get a guide book and do some reading. The Michelin Green Guide to Provence and the accompanying Green Guide to the Cote d'Azur are excellent.

The Cote d'Azur is a place where you don't want / need a car and Western Provence (Avignon, Marseille) is an area where a car is recommended.

There is no one logical base to allow you enjoy all of these places in a brief 7 day visit.

Driving around for hours every day makes zero sense.

No matter where you're from or what kind of driving you're used to doing, I don't see much point in going all the way to France for a mere week and spending half your time in a car. Provence is vast. Either pick one area and plan to see it in depth and leave the rest for a later trip, or divide your week up between a few days in Western Provence with a car and a few days on the Côte d'Azur without one.

Avignon and Marseille are definite outliers in your plan. So, either pick one region and stay a week (remember, apartments and gite generally rent from Saturday to Saturday), or split your stay between Cote d'Azur and Western Provence, stay 4/3 or 3/4 nights in each in a small inn or a B&B. Still a very viable plan.

But, why not spend more time in Provence globally? There is plenty to see and do for two weeks.

While you are getting a guide book, do also get a map. It will be very helpful to realize the distances involved and the general lay of the land. We live in Los Angeles, so we are definitely all about driving, but you really do not want to spend four to five hours in your car on a holiday.
