Food & Drink in Aix

We've booked an apartment for a week beside the Thermes Sextius. Although we plan to be out exploring in our hire car during the day, we want to enjoy strolling round Aix each evening, having a few drinks and finding not too expensive places to eat.

Where are the best parts of town to aim for? - and can anyone recommend some bars to put on our hit-list?

The centre of Aix is not large, so wandering around while browsing the menus posted outside restaurants to find something that suits is as good a way as any.

Previous reply says it all.Places on Cours Mirabeau are expensive as you might expect for the #1 thoroughfare in City Centre. But I just loved the atmosphere in city centre in June. One night there was a carnival procession and it got raucous and very busy, but not intimidating, but you don't have to join in.I just sat outside a street cafe with a beer and watched it all pass by.

I got into a ritual (typically boring me) of having a pastis in Bar Cezanne pre-dinner just off Mirabeau, then walking 100 metres away from Mirabeau to Chezjo by the small fountain for supper. So laidback and casual.Brilliant food especially provencale cheese/veg bake specialities at bargain prices-try the provencale oven-baked tomatoes with herbes served with crusty bread a meal in itself and only 10 euros!. Pizzas/pastas good too. Very busy arrive early.Popular with locals a good sign I think. The plate of crudites (raw fresh vegetables) was very popular at lunchtimes with the locals.

Aix a lovely City.Chezjo a lovely eaterie without pretentions.

Thanks for the suggestions. We'll certainly put Chezjo on our list of places to track-down.

One of the places we loved in Aix was the Cafe du Verdun - Its at 20 Place du Verdon, which is near one of the ends of the Cours, (it's not far from the Mafiesto shoe store)
