Day 7 – Monday 4/20/09 – Hotel Breakfast 6€ each was pretty basic, one croissant, cold cereal, applesauce, plain yogurt, applesauce, coffee, tea, juice. We ate from Monoprix the remaining days.
Drove to Camargue – Bugs splating all over car windows. Drive wasn’t that scenic, stopped at one lookout and saw white horses over the tall grass on the side of the road. Got to East side Digue de la Mers. Flamingos flying overhead, wow. Got out and walked along basically a dirt road, there was a breeze so it kept the bugs away. I’ve never seen a flamingo in the wild or flying. They are beautiful, bright deep pink wings with black edges.
Lunch back in Arles – fish soup, lamb provincial, beef stew, rum cake, nougat cake 36€
Drove to Le Baux, neat town, cloudy not so good for photo. Took scenic drive back to Arles, thunder storm rolled in. Nap – waiting for it to clear.
Dinner – Pasta & salad
Day 8 – Tuesday 4/21/09 – Windy, but nice and sunny high 60’s. Breakfast from Monoprix banana, orange, pain du chocolate, éclair, water 5.5€ total. Walked around Arles, old buildings are so scenic. Lots of pollen in the air, itchy eyes.
Lunch – curry chicken salad, desserts, two cokes 20€
Drove to Roussillon via scenic road looking up at Gordes. Ochre tour – WOW the colors pop. Dark clouds rolling in, good contrast with the brightly colored earth against dark clouds, then rain and hail. Waited most of it out in the car. Walked around town trying to wait for sunset, but more storm clouds coming with lighting in distance.
Dinner from deli in Roussillon– two sandwiches, two cokes, small cakes 12€
Day 9 – Wednesday 4/22/09 – Arles market today, 9:00 am, Sunny and windy. Market was a lot of produce and clothes. Huge pots of paella. Bought placements and table runner in Provincial fabric. Purchased picnic supplies, cheese, baguette, beef sausage and the reddest sweetest strawberries. Drinks from Monoprix.
Drove to Pont Du Gard. Stayed for a long time, walking/hiking around, ate picnic. Finished in museum, but it was dark in there and after walking all day, it just made us want to sleep.
Drove to Uze, but to tired to get out and walk around. Headed towards Nimes on a road like Hawaii’s Road to Hana, narrow, twisty, hilly. Hit rush hour in Nimes, not fun.
Dinner off Forum Square, restaurant full of NH student group. I had yummy thyme chicken, yucky lavender crème brulee. Migrant worker came in with son and guitar and serenaded the restaurant in Spanish. Nice touch.
