Provence\French Riveria in October

We are going to Provence for 7 nights and the French Riveria for 3 nights in late October. We are flying in and out of Nice. Upon arrival we will be renting a car and driving to Avignon for 3 nights, staying in an apartment (3 adults) at the Hotel La Magnaneraie. The next 2 nights we were going to stay in Les Baux en Provence at the Hotel Mas De L'Oulivie, then off to Aix en Provence to stay at the Hotel Cezanne for 2 nights before heading to the French Riveria. What do you think about these locations as bases. We will travel around each day by car to various smaller towns. Would we be better staying somewhere other than Aix?

On the Riveria for the last 3 nights we wanted to stay in Eze but the hotels we looked at were way too expensive. Does anyone have any ideas of small towns to stay not far from Nice and hotels. Thank you.

Have a think about doing only one of Avignon or Les Baux as you can see both and the area from one location.

You could then stay in the Vaclause or maybe east of Cavaillon towards Apt to see the villages in that area.

These sites are reliable for accommodation in that area:

well if you like to pack every 2 or 3 days, that's the way. But if not, think you have better to do, stay at the same place the whole of 7 nights, in the apart or in a B&B - just have a look on

While in Provence, we ended up staying in a lovely B&B in St. Laurent des Arbes which is about a 10 minute drive to Avignon. It's an absolutely beautiful place, very relaxing to go to after a long day of sightseeing, also nice for staying in and cooking dinner or having a glass of wine....check out the websites, it looks just as nice if not better then the pictures. www.domaine-du-moulin.com

From here we drove everywhere around Provence, there is really no need to split your time between 3 different locations. The most you'll drive is about 1 hour more or less and the drives are lovely.

I would recommend to split your time on the coast as you have planned to stay in Eze or somewhere nearby.

Agree with philpetrus that the most enjoyment certainly will come by staying in one place if you want to relax & get the best out of an area of Provence.

If you do want to see more areas then I think you will benefit from speading your stays a little wider.

Agree with all who suggest a single base around Avignon. Les Baux is an easy journey from Avignon - Aix is also quite accessible from Avignon.

Nice to Avignon is a fair way though - although the A8 motorway is quite easy driving.

Small towns wise, we particularly liked Seguret near Mont Ventoux (although this is further away from Les Baux/the Camargue area). The Gordon / Grasse area above Cannes is very pleasant for the Nice end of the trip.
